can the compression post be removed from inside. Or do I have to cut the deck. any thoughts would be welcome. John Timeless Annie 1976 E27

Is the compression post soft in your boat or is the problem in the coring of the deck under the step? On my 29 the compression post is set in a pocket in the sole and the deck inner liner.
If it is the deck coring going in from the top is the way of choice. There are threads on this site that have details and pictures of the deck repair.
If you do have to remove the compression post you will probably have to cut off a couple of inches at the bottom and then insert a shim when replacing it.
