Sailing outside Channel Islands Harbor on Saturday we saw quite a few classic wooden sailboats. Looked like a race was on. Hung around for a while and noticed a nice topsail gaff-rigged schooner with a blue hull. Very pretty. Was shooting some black and white film in my old Nikon FE2 and got a few shots. (Will post some when I get the film back.)
They took off and we didn't follow, just sailed around for a while looking at dolphins and seals. Then my friend Kathy said, "I really liked that blue boat." By then they had rounded the oil platform and were heading toward Ventura Harbor. We could see the boat about a mile away and decided to try to intercept it. Never got close.
Later that day when we returned to the harbor I picked up a copy of The Log newspaper. In the back was an article about the race. Seems as though Dennis Conner was sailing that blue boat. No wonder we couldn't catch him...
