Can't really give you an opinion, although based upon my observation of sailing inside the breakwater the last few weeks, and watching other boats, almost seems like you will have to motor out or tack a couple of times to go out of the breakwater opening, that is if you are in a hurry to get out into open water! If not, enjoy the sail.
The nice thing about getting a slip in Shoreline Marina is you can take the time to experience that marina and you can always request a transfer to Alamitos Bay, since you are already familiar with that Marina.
Good Luck and maybe I'll run into you inside the breakwater. I have a lot of friends that I have promised to take out and its more relaxing to sail inside the breakwater.
