Plumbers fittings for dummies ?

Is there a reference book for those of us who are plumber-challenged ?

Whenever I go to a hardware store to find a fitting it seems like a complete hit or miss if I'll find what I'm looking for. Thread counts, inner diameter, outer diameter, compression fittings, male, female ... and sometimes even the help in the store finally states that "you can't get there from here".

You just need to find a better HW store. We have one in portland where the plumbing guy is a retired plumber. I can walk in with 5 different fittings and walk out in 5 minutes with them all connected for $7.99.
