E27 Sails - SF Bay

A standard rig E27.

So, the new main is on order and looking at headsail options for the Bay.

I've got an inside track near the mast and an outside genoa track alongside the cockpit

I'd like to get one sail that sheets cleanly to the inside track to improve pointing. Perhaps a 95 - 105%. The working jib for the inside track just needs to fit, so I'm likely to close to as large as I can and still have a reasonable sheeting angle. Anyone have good success with this type of working jib?

I'm also considering larger headsail, but it's less of a priority. My inclination is towards a 125% or so, which is basically what we've got and seems to work reasonably in all but the light light air. Fun, easy to handle and the PHRF points for staying at 125% or smaller are the appeal there. Two small? I'm not sure, 135% is probably a better fit.

Love to hear from other E27 owners, what headsail combinations they've liked using!

And on the mainsail, anyone going loose footed?

E-27 sails

I have an E-27 that I bought in 1976 and still have. The main is about six years old and has full battens on the lower two. Works well. Were I racing, which I don't do anymore, I would replace it. As it stands now, it gets the job done well. It has two reefs and a Cunningham.

I carry a spinnaker, a storm jib and a working jib. And I live in the Tampa Bay area. When I stopped racing I took the 155 gennie off the boat and stored it in a locker ashore. The working jib was locally made five years ago, and it is a workhorse and a wonder. It's attached by a tack pendant, gives me good visibility always and pulls like a Clydesdale. In heavy air (25+) I use it without the main and have never had cause to regret it. My jibs are all hank-on. There is less to go wrong.

Head Sails

My boat is in Antioch on the Delta close to Suisun Bay. In Spring and Summer we get NW winds usually 15-25 knots so rigging small and reefing are pretty normal here. I have an inside jib track on deck, close to the cabin sides that I use with an 80% and a 95% head sail. I like to use the 95% in 12-20k winds and the 80% from 18-30k and above. The 95% fits in between the lower front and upper shroud. The 80% runs inside the shrouds. Both sails are from Quantum who took the time to measure and custom make them to the boat. So, you may want to work with your sailmaker to see what size sails work best with your track locations.

I love to fly my hang-on working jib.

Like Morgan says, it pulls beautifully. I too have used it in heavy air with no main, and the 27 still steers well, and can almost close reach. Fun times.

I also think it's a charming sail to fly.

My OLD main with 2 reef points also flies 95% of my sailing days.

Grant, it sounds like you have an almost identical setup to the one I have (I own the boat with a partner).

I too have tracks close to the cabin sides, running from the mast back a few feet. The question for me was really, 85% or 95%, what gets me inside the shrouds with an OK sheeting angle. I'm doing the incremental improvements that don't require re-doing a lot such as the track

I'll snap some photo's and get myself sorted, in particular, hadn't considered going between the shrouds the way you describe with the 95% which might be a nice option. Was the 80% the largest you could go and still sheet inside all the shrouds?

Another question: With the 95% getting you down to 12kts, what do you carry below that?

My thought without actually fitting things was something like 85% for 15 - 30 and a bigger sail for winds below that. Right now we've got a 125% which has really been a pleasant size so thinking I'd top out at 135% or so, but the missing item in the sail list right now is our a nice smaller working / heavier air jib that I can sheet in a bit tighter.

Our winds seem similar so interested in what you carry.

We're also close by, so count me interested in a sail. I'm based out of the Berkeley Marina right now, live in SF proper.

Yep, Berkeley is just around the corner. I have ambitions of spending some time this summer sailing on the bay. I'd like to slip the boat somewhere for a few weeks and drive from home - it's a 9 hour sail to the bay from Antioch with the tide. Anyways. Under 12 knots is a problem for me. Currently I use an old 150-170? that came with the boat. The boat was originally kept in Southern Cal -Oxnard to be specific. So the original sails were quite big. I actually don't know how big this sail is, but it sheets near to the gate side stanchen. The joke with the local sailors is to ask me if I have anything larger.

Backto your questions. You might be able to get an 85% to sheet inside. My 80% clue sheets just past the forward lower by about 2-4 inches. The boat points very well with this arrangement.

The 95% is the best size and power for where I sail. So is use this sail maybe 55% of the time. If the wind picks up past its comfort zone, I move the cars back and twist the sail off to de-power.

I like to carry a full main whenever possible. So that's why the 80%. Past 25 with the 80% needs a single reef. Above 30 requires the double reef. The combination of a smaller head sail and a full main I feel works well on this boat.

The 95 is on it's fouth season (I try to sail at least once or twice a week throughout the year). I plan on my next new sail being a 100% crusing laminate sail from Quantum.

Quantum is a bit pricey but their service has been excellent. If you get a quote from them, they will have the mearuments of my sails on record. Mention my name to Don Teakle. He will remember.

Fascinating stuff.

For lighter airs I use a 125% which works fine up to 15kts and is a pleasure to deal with. It's probably our 60% of the time sail, sorta like your 95%

I want to lighten the boat up a bit by getting some junk off. She's an old boat, but we get her out still.

There are tons of slips in the east bay marina's open these days, if you wanted to come down to Berkeley. There is a slip right next to ours (J-224) and the guys at the office are friendly (ask for John), $250 / month I'd estimate.
