West Marine Barient Winch Kit

Your pawls and springs may be OK, just gummed up with grease. I rebuilt 4 Barient winches that were just about to the point you mention. After cleaning all the parts it was apparent that the pawls were still good. If the edges are rounded over then they would need to be replaced.

When reassembling, only put oil on the pawls/springs. Grease will just get them gummed up again.

FYI The "standard" Barient spring and pawl kits don't work on some of the smaller self-tailing winches... they require extra small pawl and springs. I don't know where they can be found.
