I thought _our_ dolphin mega-pod encounter was amazing

I've seen the water paved with dolphins in the Gulf of Alaska, and some large pods here in the San Pedro Channel. But the best was a group of about a dozen, when two were doing counter-rotating flips in unison as though they were on the sardine payroll at Sea World. We saw this couple repeat the trick about 6 times off in the distance-- a few hundred yards away. We were sailing back to LA Harbor from Two Harbors, and were maybe two-thirds of the way home.

Over twenty years ago when returning to Dana Point, CA from Catalina we came across a dolphin "mega pod". Many hundreds of them. The interesting thing is that there were several groups of 6 to 8 that were circling the moving pod at a very high speed. Probably acting as scouts for approaching danger.

It was incredible. No pics available, however. You'll have to take my word for it. :)
