Another hand rail thread...E30+

Anyone know how the wood hand rails attach to the cabin top on the E30+? The rails are attched to molded-in "risers" on the cabin top. I looked under the headliner where the back end of the rail is located and couldn't see any through bolts. Are the "risers" solid, and the hand rails just screwed into them?

That's how they are fastened on my E38. SS sheet metal screws into molded in risers rather than through bolted. The old wood rails had plugs on top of the screw heads. If you want to preserve the rails then you need to be careful when you remove the plugs. It's very easy to chip or split off a chunk of the rail.

The risers on mine apparently have wood cores. A few had some rot which I routed out and then filled in with epoxy/glass and finishing the beds with Marine -Tex. I filled the holes in the other risers with Marine Tex too and drilled new pilot holes since the new rail holes didn't match the old ones exactly.

Thanks.

I thought about pulling them off completely when I started re-varnishing them last weekend. Then decided that was more than I wanted to tackle for the weekend. Maybe next year...
