mixing chamber...?

After emailing the folks at Vernalift... they tell me what I have is a cast iron "mixing chamber" and that the ones they make will not work as they cannot handle raw hot exshut only down line after it is mixed with water...

How have any of you handled this... what I have is 5 1/2 X 8 1/2 and 2" thick with hose going in on angle and one stright with a fitting on the side.

What type of set up do you use if you take this out of the system?

I am willing to jury rig and make it work.

The Ole Lift Station

Sounds like you have the direct exhaust with raw water heat exchanger.
Most of us have yanked these out by now and replaced them with a
lift station and raw water injection exhaust cooling system.
The old heat exchangers corrode out from excessive heat and raw water.
They really do a poor job of cooling your exhaust and were abandoned
as a Design Failure in favor of injecting raw water directly in to the exhaust
for EFFECTIVE cooling. Check out the Below Water Line Exhaust Systems
in the Vernalift Site. :)
As the old heat exchangers burn out, you are running direct exhaust
temperatures next to flammables....super fire hazard :nerd:
The lift stations work great as you install them per the Design Guidelines.

Happy Cool Exhaust :egrin: :egrin:

My guess is that most (all?) of the 80's Universal diesels used a cast iron mixing elbow that has a place for injecting the cooling water, like on my M25XP. From there the mixture of water and exhaust gases goes downhill a couple feet into a plastic water-lift muffler on our boat. Those elbows have a life span... and in salt water do need to be replaced every so many years -- just before they corrode thru.

Look at reply #19 in this thread for a picture of the one on our diesel.

But where to buy....

Yes my friend that is what it is... just like on your engine.
But Where can you buy this part?
Torresen Marine does not know what it is and or does not sell same.
Need help in finding one (mixing elbow) or how to by pass it and with what from whom.

Thanks,

Ralph
