lStrut bearing, etc.

I am about to haul out my 1984 E38 and am seeking the following information prior to haul out:
1. Does the strut bearing have a set scew? If yes, where is it? How do you get the bearing out? The prop shaft seems to be pretty well corroded into the coupling.
2. How advisable is it to replace the standing rigging on a 18 year old boat?
3. Anyone have experience stripping 18 years of bottom paint off to bare gel coat?

I can speak to the rigging part of the question. The local rigger that just replaced all the rigging on our '88 tells me that 10 to 12 years is about right, in general. (We are in colder fresh water)
For warm waters and/or a salt water environment, 5 years. I would say that you are way overdue.

As to the bottom paint build up, how about one of the strippers that you put on as a gel, cover with plastic, and leave for hours? Pract. Sailor has tested some and seemed to like them.

Plan B is to use a "dustless" vacumn sander and work away until it's gone...
:(

1. My advice is to let the yard handle the strut bearing.

2.You need new rigging.

3. Stripping a big buildup of bottom paint is best handled
with chemicals. This big nasty job goes easier if you can
cajole friends and family into helping. If the product you
are using contains methylene chloride, you need respirators,
paint suits, and heavy rubber gloves. Get a couple of sheets
of luan plywood to act as a dropcloth. Allow the product time
to work and then scrape the dregs with a wide putty knife.
Reapply and scrape until you are looking at gelcoat. Attached
is a photo of my wife demonstrating the above!
