Winchmate Self-Tailing Conversions for Barlow/Barient Winches

Has anyone using these winch conversions yet? <http://www.winchmate.com>

My E39 has two big Barlow 32s and two 28s, plus half a dozen or so smaller Barlows. I'd really love having STs, but a Lewmar 58ST is over $2300!

These conversions promise to turn these good old winches into true self-tailers for only $500 a pop. Would like to see someone using them before going down this route.

Testimonials

There are hundreds of Winchmates in use and I would be glad to send you an extensive list of Winchmate customers to contact. To date, we have a 100% satisfaction rate as well as not a single problem. There is also a demo program where you can try one on for free!

URL for the product.
Seems worth a look. I have seen this installed on a pair of winches, but have not seen them in use.
Machining appeared very clean, to my unprofessional eye.

I am glad that David has put such a *low key* notice on our site. Lack of hype is always appreciated.
I note that the thread originator never got any replies, pro or con, either.

Now thats a good idea! There are so many nice old winches around in very good shape. Not a lot of money considering what you get out of it. RT

Winchmate on Barient 30's

I have installed and used Winchmate's spring loaded jaw, self tailing conversion and they are great!!

These are on Barient aluminum drum 2 speed 30's from the early 70's that were in very good condition.

They performed as advertised, were very easy to install and look good, too. An upgrade that is not cheap, but worth every dollar.

Another option along a similar vein...

Our cousins sent a pair of old non-selftailing Barient 55's or 60's (massive and $$$) down to Arco Winches in Australia. In about a month they had returned with self-tailers welded onto the top. They look good and are very happy with them. Cost a very small fraction of what self-tailers would for their size of boat.

I checked out their installation video and it seems like a pretty well made product.

They also had a link to this site with a bunch of Barient and Barlow schematics, which I thought was very useful:

I have a little Barient 8P winch for my boom vang that I could never figure out how to take apart to lubricate. Now I know.

This doesn't really seem like advertising to me since someone asked about a specific product and the manufacturer responded. This thread is almost two years old anyway...

What is Winchmate doing ADVERTISING on our Site ?

Information, useful to Ericson owners, presented in answer to a direct question from an Ericson owner, is not "advertising" as I see it.

YMMV.

I installed Winchmate ST conversions on Barient 28 jib winches on my E36RH over a year ago.... what a great addition!!! Makes a huge difference for single-handing, which I do a lot of.

Is Winchmate still in business? Website is for sale. I never acted on these but now would love to get my hands on a pair of Winchmate conversion kits for a set of Barlow 25 winches, plus a couple more for a set of Barlow 22s.
