E35-2 fuel tank removal

I have a 1979 Ericson 35-2 that has a leaking diesel tank.

The tank is located behind the engine under the cockpit.

Has anyone replaced this type of tank?

How is this accomplished?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Replace that Fuel Tank

Replaced the old leaking fuel tank on the E35-II :boohoo:
1. Remove the door and frame under the stairs
2. Disconnect fuel and vent hoses. Empty Tank with oil change pump
3. Fuel tank will pull out through opening :D
4. Move fuel inlet OUT of Cockpit floor and install on Port Deck up through
open storage locker
5. Take tank to builder and copy pattern (+10" height for max 40GA Storage)
Have tank constructed with 3/16" welded alluminum. Install FPT ports for
1 1/2" INLET / 1/4" OUTLET / 1/2" VENT / 1/2" electronic fuel guage /
1/2" DIPSTICK
6. Install tank with 2"x2"x1/4" neoprene gasket material chafe guards on
corners. Fasten tank down with 1" ss sheet metal strap. Use nylon hose
for chafe guard.
7. Replace frame and door

There are pics of this in the links

Good Luck :egrin: :egrin:

Mid Engine Fuel Tank Replacement

The 74' E35II is a Mid Engine Model. Sounds like the 79' was Aft Engine
This does make getting the tank out a we bit more complcated
Let me know as I can help

This is an aft engine model.

The only way I see to do a decent job is to pull the engine.

Is there another way?

Thanks,

John

We have a 1975 aft engine model. I will have to take some measurements, but I think that the tank would come out through the starboard lazarette.

I took mine out by cutting out the deck above it, which had a wet core so needed to be redone anyway. If the deck is in good shape, it would be easier to pull the engine.

I got the new one from:

http://www.floridamarinetanks.com/

I sent them the dimensions. The new tank should be made from Aluminium. They may have a record of the dimensions of my tank, if you give them my name; I spent quite a bit of time figuring out the exact size and shape I wanted.

BTW, I made the order in Jan or Feb 2005, if that helps them find it. I changed the dimensions slightly to allow it to go slightly further aft, freeing up space for a water lift.

:egrin: It is Official. You can defiantly pull the stock factory 20 gal tank out through the starboard locker on a E35.2 with the under the companionway steps engine. I know because just returned from doing it on my 1981 E35-2. The tank is the original (still has the MFG's label attached) and was manufactured in 1979. Now all I need to do is find someone in Cascadia who can build me an exact replacement. Anyone have any recommendations?

Replacement tank.

Tom, Congratulations on getting your tank out without having to take the boat apart to do it. My E31 is also a 1979 and its tanks were made by Berry Sheetmetal, a company still in business down here in SoCAl and maybe yours was made by them too. Why not give them a call to see if they have patterns or drawings for your tank already? Here's their number: 949.548.3613 Good luck, Glyn Judson E31 hull #55, Marina del Rey, CA
