Ericson 36C 'Blue Jeans' Mast Corrosion

Blue Jeans

Member I
The mast from 'Blue Jeans' has corrosion on the bottom. I am considering cutting about 1/4" to 3/8" off to remove it completely. Is this a reasonable fix? What will that do to the mast rigging?

I had to do this to a Beneteau 50 about four months ago. Similar situation with bad corrosion at the bast of the mast. Ended up cutting about an inch of the bottom and then just fabricating a new insert out of UHMW (really dense plastic). One attached, the piece of UHMW made it so the rigging did not even need to be adjusted.

Look at your turnbuckles. Depending on how much you are cutting off, there might be enough play left in the turnbuckles to account for this without the need to have anything done to the rigging.
