Two Cameras at Avalon

Did you notice that there are two cameras on the Avalon site. One is a view from a Hotel looking out towards the Casino and the other is looking over the town and harbor from the Casino.

ZZZZZzzzzzzz....

Get with the program, old man! A friend of mine (in Alaska) discovered that site a couple months ago, and found me moored in front of the Tuna Club. Can't hide anywhere anymore!

Hey, off topic, but I'm curious. I went out yesterday afternoon, and there were 44 purse seiners anchored off Cabrillo Beach, all squeezed into about one square mile. Do you know what they're catching right now?

Well Hi Ya Mark,

Well Hi Ya Mark,

I actually found that cam last Summer but it kept showing the same shot from August 22nd. I poked at the computer a little more and got it to update. I have no idea what their fishing for now. I never catch more than Mackerel or Bonitos out there this time of year. I have been under the weather and haven't had the boat out since last weekend. I am ashamed to say that the chill factor this last week has kept me away as well.

Checked out you boat Mark!

Checked out your boat Mark!

I had a little time to kill on Sunday so I took a stroll down you dock and checked out Whisper. She's a beauty! Saw your new Quantum furling jib. Very nice. I also noticed the lobster hoops on your for deck. Any luck? I ran into this guy at my Marina who caught a bunch off the west end of San Clemente Island! Nice big bugs!:egrin:

She's still floating?

I haven't been down there in in a little more than a week. I have all the covers home for repairs and washing, so I imagine she's covered in bird crap and blown Santa Ana dirt by now.

I need to do something with the hull--it's chocky and seems porous. It also has some scars from the previous owner that really look bad when you view them from the Two Harbors shoreboat. Any suggestions?

I love the new genoa--we picked up a few knots instantly!

The lobster hoops work really well. I just drop a few pots whenever we're moored at Catalina, and we ususally catch 4-6 good sized bugs in a night. Not bad considering we don't leave the mooring, and we're just drinking in the cockpit.

I am sure you did pick up some speed. Regarding you finish. Lot's of love and work. My boat was the same when I got it. I used lots of rubbing compound first, then the Meguir's One Step, Wax and compound, then Meguire's wax. That was the first year I had the boat. Back breaking work, I don't want to do it again.

The next year I hired a guy to wax it and it looked a lot more even, less blotchy than the job I did but still not great. The next year I hired a different guy and he and his crew worked magic! He charged me $320. and he started from scratch, rubbing compound of his own formula and wax. He really does a good job if you don't want to try it your self.

His name is Jose Gomez and his phone number is (310) 832-8031. The best finish restorer I have seen yet.

All and all your boat looks in pretty good shape. Do you have covers for the wood? Best to keep it covered up or it will need attention in a year or so.

Covers

Yeah, I have covers for all the wood, but some are falling apart. I'm trying to repair them now.

The wood already needs attention in spots--I'll be attending to that in the next couple weeks.

Thanks for the tip on Jose Gomez. Does he work right at the dock? Do you know if he can do gelcoat repairs?

I am not sure if Jose does gel coat repairs. Yes, he works with the boat in the water and polishes right down to the water line.

Gel Coat, I have done a little bit of that my self. The real trick is matching the color. I never get it perfect. If it's just scratches I use Marine Tex and sand smooth. Then I have used Awl Grip Gel Coat paint. I do know of a very good fiberglass guy in Long Beach but he's real expensive. His name is Martin Buxton, (562) 436-6330. There is another guy in Pedro I used. He's a lot cheaper but you have to put up with his flakey reliability. His name is Jeff, (310) 422-7100. Jeff's girl friend does some of the best varnishing I have ever seen. Also a bit Flakey. I do my own varnish.

As far as scratches go, I still live with a few. Hell, my boat is 34 years old, she's allowed a few blemishes. I am 50 and don't expect to look 20 years old any time soon. I just do the best I can with what I've got.
Of course I fantasize about getting the boat a new coat of LP or Awl Grip. I have had low estimates of 3K. Just too dam expensive.

Thanks for the tips!

My hull has some gelcoat scars that go down to the fiberglass. They're not only ugly, but I worry about saturating the fiberglass with water. If Jose can't tackle those, I'll try it myself. Then I'll have him polish her up.

I'm going to start some interior woodwork to replace a settee back and shelf a previous owner removed. Unfortunately, I don't know what type of wood was used on the opposite side, and I need them to match. I'll take some pics today to see if any of you recognize the wood.

I can't believe it's January already! I intended to complete these projects in December, but we were too busy sailing.

Most of my interior is mahogany aside from teak for the fiddles. I remember when I refinished the engine cover I used some mahogany stain after I bleached it so it would match. Some of my interior wood is mis matched and some still needs attention.

Keep on sailing in the mean time. My boat is far from cosmetically perfect but it functions perfectly. That's what's important. Winter is the best time to do what you can. My spring, Summer and Fall is all about Sailing!
