Luff tape sizes?

Mike Thomas

Member II
Hi all,

Can someone clarify luff tape terminology for me.

I have older Furlex furler and in the users manual indicates that slots
in the furler foil are Ø6 mm (that's a zero with a slash through it
followed by 6mm). The notes recommend a max Ø5mm luffrope/lufftape (max Ø4
mm "hard line")

The luff on my existing jib measures 3/16 and slides up and down the
foil just fine.

I'm in the market for a head sail but all of the sail sites (new and
used) usually refer to the luff tapes as number five (#5) luff tape or
number six (#6) luff tape.

Is a Ø6mm luff tape referred to as a #6 luff tape?

Thanks
Mike T

I did a quick search on the 'net and found a sizing chart at the Annapolis Performance Sailing web site that included the information that a #6 "Luff Tape Size" equals 6/32 inch, or can be expressed as 5 mm.
Another sailing web site mentioned that the #6 tape is standard on most head sails.
Hope this helps,
Loren

quick MM/inch conversions

For everyone's reference 1 mm = .040 in, 1/16 or 2/32 in = 1.5mm, 6/32 or 3/16 = .187 in., 5mm = .199 in. 6mm = .240 or 1/4 in., etc. Can be kinda confusing until you use it awhile. You should try building prototype auto parts when the information comes in metric and all your tools are english. Loren is correct about the luff tape sizes refering to 32's. Hope this helps.
Have fun & sail fast
