Unfurling problem

hmdjamesh

Member I
I have an Ericson 26-2 1987 recently purchased. I’ve had no problems until recently when I’m unable to completely unfurl my headsail
It will “open” about halfway, and despite pulling on jib sheet, nothing happens. The furling line is free, no kinks or binding
Any suggestions on a fix?
thanks!

Get out the binocs and take a look at the head of the sail. The top of the rollerfurling rig has a ball bearing race in it in between the halyard attachment and the sail attachment. If that stops turning freely the halyard will try to wrap around the forestay and will stop the sail from unfurling.

So if you have it half unfurled and look up and see your halyard twisted around the forestay you know you've got a problem. You'll have to manually unfurl the sail (on a calm day) so you can drop the sail and get at the thing to fix it.

Good Luck!
