Rudder Hang Time

Grizz

Grizz
This Thread is being inserted into the galactic electron stream mostly 'just because'. Just because it's April, it snowed last night, rained all weekend with a howling NE wind blowing the last maple leaf stragglers all the way from Canada, a wind that whipped gnarly 15-footers along the lakefront, quite impressive.

The 44° F within the Unheated portion of the Boat Yard the past 2 weeks was 'just sufficient' to roll on the final coat (of 5) of Interprotect 2k, culminating in a wet sand on Saturday, smooth as glass and ready to receive VC-17 and rehang.

The Iphone, that invaluable collector and keeper of everything, proved where last night's fatigue originated: 11 floors navigated Saturday and 'only' 8 yesterday, up-and-down the same ladder, 3+ miles walked Saturday to-and-from the only water source, 50% carrying 2 1-gallon jugs of water to facilitate the wet sand of the hull and rudder procedure. Ugh!

The additional 5 coats were rolled on (again) 'just because', just because the good folks at Finco shipped it last year with a factory standard gelcoat finish, which was probably 'good enough' as is, but now it's got a supplemental skin 'just because'.

And last (but not least), the pic is included 'cuz I like its composition, with light and the unusual shape centered, horizontal elements and shadows playing, from an elevated POV. Also 'just because'...

Happy Tax Day! :)

Why is this rudder being "questioned" under hot lights?

What's next..... Water?

Grizz, What's the factory standard gelcoat? Need to do touchups.

Great looking job. You will be ready to race soon.

Factory standard = gelcoat

Yes, Finco's standard is gelcoat, bright white. The extra skin was applied just to be sure. The wet sand procedure returned the skin to Finco glass smooth.

As to the somewhat unexpected and unsettling interrogation questions, they certainly make the presence of the hacksaw on the 4th step just a bit more ominous than intended!

Is now too early to reveal the 'questioners' reaction to gaining nothing from their effort? It was "Rats! Foiled again." OK, that 1 should cost at least $1...

Apparently the $1 self-inflicted wasn't sufficiently punitive...

There's a Catalina site? Who knew?

Switching gears, Zephrywerks delivered the 4 masthead sheaves today, (3) @ 3.25" x .5" for 1/2" axle and 3/8" halyards + (1) @ 2.5" x .5" for 3/8" axle and 3/8" halyard.

These replace the 1989 OEM wire-to-rope beasts, long overdue. Bushings worn out, all wobbly/sloppy to varying degrees. A PITA to remove, even with mast horizontal. Unfortunately, it's 14+' off the floor, 100% ladder work = ugh. Almost lost one of the big ones down the mast, took another 45-minutes to figure a way to retrieve it. Had to pull the guard to gain access to remove the 3 large sheaves, the guard secured by 3 screws, 2 of which were seized, needing heat, PB Blaster and total fear of rounding out the Phillip heads. Eventually, the initial "snap!" of the threads bustin' free proved to be a lovely sound.

The (4) OEM's weighed a cumulative 19 ozs., the Delrin sheaves from Zephyrwerks haven't been weighed, yet, but will be. Feels like 50%, but that may be optimism thinking. No clue if that 50% reduction means anything. Just shy of 2 Boat Units, but will be well worth it. "Dibs!" has already been called for the initial hoist of the main, not transferable. Mid-May as a very fuzzy target date.
