ericson 38 keel

The chance that someone would have a keel just sitting around their driveway to sell to you, and the chance that it would be within easy trucking distance of your boatyard... is.... um....slender....
:)
However, I know that someone on this list has had their stock E-38 keel shortened a foot or so, and Mars Metals made them a split-casting torpedo lead bulb to bolt on to the keel after the bottom was sawed off.
Here is a URL for the company:
http://www.marsmetal.com/html/torpedobulbs.htm
Also try a search on the archives at the ericson list at Sailnet.com, as well as here.

I checked into changing to a shoal draft custom keel for our 6' draft Olson, and was quoted about $8K, which would buy me a new steel hollow fin with a lead torpedo on the bottom, and even give me an additional diesel tank! Note that this option would only be pursued if maintaining the present speed potential, or at least 98% of it.
Note that since the "split torpedo" option increases the total ballast, I would want an N.A. to recalculate the loads on the existing keelbolts and internal grid structure, first...
I do not know your situation, since you do not say where you sail, but if we could change from 6' to 5' of draft, it would open up additional cruising areas around here; I just do not have $8K. to spend...

Keep us posted, and do let us know what design and cost quotes you come up with.
