Factory Fitted Instruments on 1986 38-200 Datamarine LX3600 Masthead unit and other q

G'day crew,

Does anybody know where I can buy/obtain/find/beg/or get a hold of a MASTHEAD Unit for a Datamarine LX3600 SN 021775 wind speed and direction unit with plug to fit in place of my masthead unit which is gone. Not when, but possibly during a hurricane before I purchased her 'Merrimist'.

Of the four fitted instruments, only the depth is still functioning, but not the Day/Night /Off toggle switch - no difference seen when switching.

Factory fitted (I am suggesting) Instruments that are unserviceable:

1. LX3600 as noted above, fingers crossed, fitting the masthead unit that is missing so that the gauge has an input may have it working, help in finding the masthead unit is requested. Maybe someone here has upgraded their instruments and kept an old functioning one that they are willing to part with. If not, does anyone know where I can purchase either original or suitable aftermarket with same plug that would fit?

2. A Datamarine Model S100KL SN. 048079.I have checked that the paddle wheel for the log is clear and free to rotate, but no reading on factory fitted gauge.

3. Course Deviation / Distance Indicator Model CDX SN.011216 not working.

FYI - there was a Loran 'C' unit fitted to Merrimist when I become the happy new owner, (anybody remember using this system), I have since removed the aerial and base keyboard unit - forwarded to a museum, well, I was thinking about giving to a museum, gave it to an old electronics tech who was happy to fiddle with it.
I am not sure if this Loran 'C' was somehow connected to the Datamarine Log Course Deviation / Distance Indicator noted at 3. above.
If it was, I am guessing that I could remove the Course Deviation / Distance Indicator Model CDX SN.011216. Can anybody forward information on this query. Would be much appreciated.

Finally, for this rambling post, if anybody has upgraded or replaced the factory fitted Datamarine instruments - would like to hear from you. Have you fitted Like for like, or remove and trash old and fit new - how much time and or money was involved. I would like to do this myself, i.e. get my original fitted currently unserviceable instruments working or replace with new. Again, comments on your experience is welcomed.

Hammy - DMI Marine http://www.dmimarine.com/ is the go to place for Datamarine instrument repair/parts/info. That said, before spending much money on bringing 30 year old instruments back to life I'd recommend going with new, modern instruments.

I agree on throwing everything away and not looking back.

Any current $500 chart plotter gives GPS speed, depth and a world chart accurate to a stone's throw.

In order to be cool, I added a Tack-Tick (now Raymarine) wireless anemometer as a decoration and conversation piece.

But the fact is that most of us can tell where the wind is coming from and estimate its speed using the human sensors already installed in our head.

thank you waking me up to the fact that 30 years old electronics require to be replac

Thank you for the replies, Tom & Christian, both considered and taken onboard. Am going to bite the bullet and make a plan to replace original with new.
30 year old instruments spares to fix, what was I thinking....... And I wonder if Christian tack tick item fitted as a conversation piece is connected, by the tone of the sentence, I think not.

Now the fun can start, what to buy for reliable cruising - I like the idea of the wireless instruments, but not entirely convinced about the life of these type of systems.
Am going to enjoy the research and fact finding trying to sort out the fancy claims of some manufacturers' compared to the real in service, in use experiences that some of you may like to comment on, Comments welcomed.

Moore Marine still makes a very 70s like Analog Wind instruments (they have digital as well)

The Question is will their mast head drive an old analog Datamarine? Migh be worth a phone call.

It works fine. No wires, solar recharge. But, expensive.

Christian - yes, expensive. It makes people with electronics experience scratch their heads a bit. Maybe if they would come climb the mast and install it it would be worth the expense (of course if you want it it is worth what you pay for it, no judgement intended here).

Expensive, Yes Worth Every Penny, Yes, To Me

I was fortunate to get mine two years ago at $1,100.00. Even though my mast comes down every season I didn't want to run any more wires through it. Sensor is removed and spends the winter nice and warm inside.

Throwing Stones

I can see getting speed from the plotter (or an iPhone) but depth scares me. Lake Champlain has a very dynamic bottom and I've heard stories of people running aground with their noses buried in their plotters. Do I need to stop worrying and love the bomb? Am I trapped in the days before SkyNet? I'd like to believe because the sensors in my bow appear to be dead.

Garmin

I used Garmin and started with just the 741 chart plotter. I only mention this Bc I spliced the char plotter into the existing datamarine sounder and it works great with the Garmin. I cam back a few weeks later and added the wind sensor. The networking mak s adding things down the road a breeze. Just my $.02 worth.

Networking is great, but if you are anywhere near skinny water, I don't think there is any substitute for a dedicated depth sounder display at the helm.

Starting from scratch, I used an iPhone and a ST40 depth sounder. That said, there are some cool gadgets that do send depth to your phone. I found a cool little depth sounder that is basically a fishing bobber that sends data to an iPhone via wifi. You can tow it or cast it. But I don't know if you can really navigate with it. I've gotta figure out some way to float it about twenty feet in front of the boat...

A chartplotter gets depth from a transducer--how is that not as accurate as any other display?

On the Garmin basic models I've had, you always see depth on the nav display, or can select to view the full bottom profile--for fishing, I guess.

The Old Connect The Transducer to the Plotter Trick..

Here is where my excessive exposure to GIS left me open for ridicule. I thought the plotter was taking depth from the charts and that we had arrived at the place and time where GPS was sufficiently accurate to provide accurate soundings based on big data. They'll sell a boat to anybody these days.

Darrel - I am interested in knowing more about splicing the Datamarine sounder to the Garmin - are there any tricks to that (for example, any resistors needed to change impedance)?
