alternator belt

Hello all,
On my 1986 E- 38 the alternator is maxed out on the bracket arm. I still believe it is not as taunt as it should be ( 1/2" play to the touch). Would there be any harm done by getting a slightly shorter belt? Will the increase in rpm's over heat the alternator?

Thanks as always,

A shorter belt won't change the RPMs of any of the things it is connected to.

Note that a larger or smaller pulley *would* change relative speeds.
