Hello,

My wife and I moved to Newport Beach from the Chicago area in May of last year and just 3 weeks ago had our first child; a girl we named Langley. We figured that a cross country move and first child wasn't enough craziness in our lives all at once so we also bought a boat last week with my parents, which is now in it's slip in Newport Beach. It's an Olson 34 which is in good shape but needs some sails before she would be a competitor.


I grew up in a suburb north of Chicago and have been sailing as long as I can remember. I have experience on all sorts of boats but this is the first "big boat" (i.e. with an inboard and not dry sailed) of my own so most of my questions will likely be about maintenance.

Happy to be here! Had the boat out twice so far and hope to go for our first full day sail tomorrow.

Loren, that graphic is great! Is the file located someplace for use?

Hopefully going to flush the coolant this weekend and see if the HX needs to be boiled or not.

The to do list....

I've owned the boat for 3 weeks now and here is the list of stuff I've come up with so far.....Some big, some small, some more critical than others.

Short Term Work

  • Determine stuffing box type and fix if needed; Currently bone dry
  • Find and fix coolant reservoir leak
  • Clean water intake grate
  • Pump Water Tank Dry & Fill ½ way and add antibacterial tablets
  • Fix leaking port
  • Toss old and buy new life jackets
  • New first aid kit
  • New anchor line
  • Change name/port decals
  • Fix or Remove Hot Water Tank
  • Add ventilation blower
  • Fix speedo
  • Get (fix?) depth meter
  • Resolve fender rubbing situation (flat fenders?)
  • Set Fender line length
  • Replace Running Rigging
  • Get stove working
  • Replace stereo
  • Halyard cleat labels


Long Term

  • New Sails
  • Recut Plexi & Rebed Windows (ports)

Great name!
I wonder it it would it look good with the "O" in the revel font? i.e. the Olson logo font?

It would probably look fine, but the underscored "O" (a numeric indicator.... for you language nerds)has some minor meaning for me.

Phil Weld was a commando in Burma, carried a wounded enlisted man through machinegun fire on his back, published newspapers on the North Shore, won the OSTAR at 65. He was tall and gangly, extraordinarily interested in other people, and sailed alone because his big family wasn't all that interested. Back from the war, this Boston Brahmin, selling ads for his newspaper, encountered a business owner who engaged him in antisemitic remarks, figuring to chat with a fellow traveler. Weld punched him in the nose. He was a friend of my father's, and I got to spend time in his company.

Phil contacted the Moxie company when he was launching his boat. The old soft drink, which tasted terrible, was tryign to make a comeback. Always an entrepreneur, Weld opened talks for sponsorship, since they shared the name,.He said the company had no conception of marketing, treated him like a crank, and sent him a small box of Moxie memorabilia, which he used to show around and tell the story. .

Moxie was at the Naval Academy a while, wonder if she is still there.

Great name! I read Phillip Welds book about his OSTAR victory about 30 years ago. He was a great man.
