Memorial day is coming up !
We assume that Catalina Island (Isthmus harbor etc.) will be swamped with boaters.
So, we're thinking that Santa Barbara Island might be an interesting alternative ?
We've been there on quite a few dive trips on the Great Escape <http://www.diveboat.com> but we've never sailed there or tried to anchor overnight. Playing with the sea lions (actually they are the ones who play with you is great but the accompanying flies are not. Are the flies tolerable in the anchorage off the East of SBI or will they force us to keep the boat closed up ?
Is the anchorage off the East of SBI likely to be too full to allow a single-anchor overnight stay on a weekend as busy as Memorial Day ?
The books say the anchorage is in about 30 feet and that it is a sandy bottom. It sounds pretty perfect in prevailing winds, but I'd still appreciate any first hand experiences that would shed additional insghts.
A 40-NM open water upwind crossing in La Petite will certainly keep us busy for many hours so I'd like to make sure it won't be a complete waste because we chose the wrong place to spend the night.
Insight appreciated ... as usual
