Parts is parts. (But where do we find them?)

Does anybody know where I can locate parts for my E-34, both new and used, Ericson-specific and otherwise?

For example, the cover for my Ritchie Globemaster got off the boat in Ketchikan in a strong southeasterly and is now presumably enjoying a new life at sea somewhere near Juneau. I don't care for the new ones Ritchie makes and would prefer to have another old-fashioned form-fitting fiberglass one.

Any ideas?

This is a good place to start. Why not post in the wanted to buy / for sale section?
Try searching nationally on Craigslist or checking out places like Sailorman in South Florida. I know he sells used boat parts. http://www.sailorman.com
Try http://usedsailboatparts.com or
http://www.sailboatwreckingyard.com
or http://donsmarinesalvageyard.com/Aboutus.html

Another one for you. They look to have the compass for sale now http://www.islandcompass.com/forSale.htm

You could also post on boards like Sailnet or Cruisers Forum.
Good luck
Rick

I've used Craigslist (local and national) with success. I've also found Ebay to be very good for older, out of production parts. If you create a search criteria on Ebay, it will email you whenever an item is listed. This saves a lot of time. Once you've figured out good search parameters that get what you want and eliminate unwanted items you'll start to see if items you need are often listed or rare. One advantage of Ebay over a national Craigslist search is Ebay is intended to be used from a distance and provides services to cover aspects of transactions where parties are not local to each other, where Craigslist is really geared to local sellers/buyers who can meet to view the item and complete the transaction. I see a lot of the regional marine consignment shops are listing stuff on Ebay now to expand their customer base which allows you to see their stuff without visiting the shop.

When it comes to trying to find individual replacement items, I ask here first. Hundreds will have worked the same problem, and the pool of experience is vast. Some issues have no exact solution, such as rubrail extrusions that are no longer manufacturer by anybody.

The forum search function, like those of all such programs, is quite limited. Many of us use Google first, and if narrowing down to Ericsons, include "EYo_Org". I also comb this forum using the tag cloud, trying all possible tags and noting the list of similar threads that appears at the end of each thread. A dull perseverance can pay off.

I also use Google Images for objects such as a "Ritchie compass cover". In the slew of pictures that appear you can click on one that looks interesting and be taken to the site of origin.

It is very useful simply to put your own boat ("Ericson 32-3") into Google Images. You have an immediate glance at other folks biminis, paint jobs, and so on.

On this topic, it is a great help to others to make thread titles specific, because that way the search engines better return them to others searching. Everything on forums is eventually available through Google Search.

When uploading a photograph to this forum, for example, if it says "img03391" or "My Boat" it is of not much value to anyone.

If the photo is entitled "Ericson 34 spinnaker pole mount" or "Yacht Specialties Pedestal Guard" it is available worldwide, and will soon appear in Google images for the benefit of a kindred spirit in Boston or Seattle.

Needless to say, this all has helped me out a good deal.

Finding parts for your Ericson.

Mark is right when suggestion consignment stores across the country and Canada. The best single source for a list of them can be found at the Good Old Boat web sight: http://www.goodoldboat.com/resources_for_sailors/consignment_stores.php I cannot begin to list all of the hard to find items I've gotten from that way. To name a few, a pair of replacement Barlow 2-speed self tailing primary winches in Rhode Island, Wilcox Crittenden bronze access plates in San Pedro CA, a W/C boat hook in Canada, W/C navigational lights in Mystic CT and so much more. Work your way down from the top of the list and start calling, I'm sure you'll find much of what you are looking for. Here's wishing you the best of luck, Glyn Judson, E31 hull #55, Marina del Rey CA

Rub rail availability.

Christian and all, Doesn't Wefco still offer rub rail extrusions? They can be contacted at www.wefcorubber.com. Just because you don't see a profile of your rubber doesn't mean that they don't have it or can't make it from a supplied sample. It's been years since owning an Ericson with rubber extrusion but I did buy over 60 feet from them for our E25+. Why not give them a shout? Glyn Judson, E31 hull #55, Marina del Rey CA

Well, unfortunately my model has an aluminum rub rail which is no longer available. Taco has one or two that are close (A11-0511). Yes, there are lots of alternatives in vinyl with inserts, or stainless half-round. Depends on the boat, apparently.
