Ever since I bought my Ericson 29 almost 2 years ago, I've had trouble with the mainsheet. I've consistently had trouble getting the mainsheet into the cam cleat, and also releasing the sheet from the cam cleat, which felt very dangerous in high winds.

I thought the problem was the angle of the fiddle block. I tried raising the fiddle block, which made little difference.

On Sunday, I got very frustrated again, so I removed the blocks to take them to the local rigger to see if they could help with any sort of solution. I was seriously thinking of adding a mainsheet winch, almost solely to take care of this problem.

But on my way out the door, I grabbed a spare line to demonstrate the problem to the rigger, and the other line went in and out of the cam like butter. The problem vanished.

As it turned out, the source of two years of problems was the previous owner had replaced the mainsheet line with a slightly undersized line (7/16" vs. 1/2").

Problem solved. Lesson learned.

Hail all,

When I was a young man, it was all about speed. But now...

Well, suffice it to say, toddlers don’t race in the A1 fleet. And these days, much less of my time and income are allotted to sailing.

Now, I'm looking for a boat that will fare well in the C fleet. I'll be racing with Santana 27s, Cal 29s, Ranger 29s, and the ubiquitous Catalina 30, which seems to be the boat to beat.

The rating band for the C fleet is approximately 160-200. I sail out of Long Beach CA, where moderate winds (8-18 knots) and fairly flat seas prevail.

My getting-in budget is $10-20K. All the subject boats fit this budget and rating band.

I'm looking for opinions on chosing an Ericson for racing in PH fleet.

Who's your competition? Can you correct on the Cat 30s?

I'm partial to frac rigs of the 28 and 30+s, but am a little worried that the 30 will have to give the Cat 30s too much time. The 28+ will race them almost straight up, and to me, that match up looks good for the 28.

What's your take?

Hi all, I'm new to this site, but love my Ericson 27 that I sail in the Albamarle Sound and surrounding waters.

One quick question. The mast has a large space for the sail slugs to enter their groove, but it means that when I raise or lower the sail, the slugs rarely make it across the space without falling out. This is inconvenient because my halyards are lead back to the cockpit forcing the helmsman to tail while the deck crew is hoisting and guiding slugs. Inefficient to say the least.

How should I rig the halyard so that I can just raise from the cockpit or at least not be forced to guide every slug?
Most of the boats I've sailed on only had non-rigid vangs and the ones that had a rigid vang I didn't think too much about it. We have a spare halyard that we are planning to use as a topping lift. I have scoured all the posts about vangs and have yet to find the "gotcha" post that seals the deal on spending the extra money on a rigid vang. Is there a point where the size of the boat/main and length of the boom make it silly to not have a rigid vang?

In full disclosure, I have not yet hoisted the main that came with the boat to see if the leech interferes with the toppinng lift and the boat has no vang now...

Thoughts?

Thanks much!
