New Teak & Holly Sole & Cupboard

Rate this Entry
This winter I finally got around to starting the cosmetic to-do projects that the admiral has been pushing me to do since day one of purchasing my E38. Some of the sole in the galley, head, quarter berth, and companionway entrance had been badly water damaged at some point in the boats past, with the epoxy/varnish lifting and holly badly mold damaged. So I ripped up the sections and cut out new sections of Teak and Holly 3/4" plywood. FYI the 8ftx4ft sheets cost $300/each.

Using the old sections as a template for the new sections made this job relatively easy. While I had these sections in the garage I epoxy sealed the rear side and edges of the plywood prior to installing back in the boat. I'm just now waiting for the temperatures to rise a little higher here so I can then epoxy seal the front of the plywood, yes I'm planning to use epoxy rather than have to apply 10 coats of varnish. The rest of the boats sole was previously epoxy sealed and has held up well.

The previous owner had also cut out a section of the cabinetry in the galley in front of the aft cold box and installed a door on it. I'm guessing he was planning to install a cupboard of sorts in it at some point. This aft cold box we only use for storage and the hole cut into the cabinet had the insulation removed in any case. So I fabricated a teak cabinet/cupboard box thingy using 3/8" solid teak pieces and a teak veneer plywood back and inserted it into this wasted space. Once installed I varnished it. This cabinet will now be used for spices etc. By the way I'm no natural wood worker so this was all hard work!

    Hi Mike,

Do you have any of the original T&H sole left? Looking for a small piece about 12 x 15 inches. Thanks, Mark

Sorry I dumped the old sole, trust me it was stuffed. But I do have a small piece of the new T&H plywood. The holly strips are in the short 12 inch direction. Its 3/4 thick.

    Mike,
Thanks! The new T&H has different widths of the T and the H compared to the old stuff I have.
