Well, let me start from the very beginning...

You see, before taking the boat from Los Alamitos Bay in Long Beach up to Marina Del Rey, I thought I’d post on this site and see if there was anyone with a good amount of experience interested in sailing up the coast with me. I wasn’t going to do the trip without experienced sailors accompanying me.

Matt was very experienced, and very patient. He systematically went through our safety systems aboard, and finding everything to be in order he gave the nod to his admiral, who was following along in her dinghy, ready in an instant to grab him from my boat if she saw anything suspect.

After all, I was complete stranger, and she was obviously smart to be cautious since her husband was now on a trip in an unknown boat, with an inexperience sailor, for a pretty long trip. What could possibly go wrong!

Luckily for me, he knew my Ericson model inside and out.

Unluckily for him, he was about to embark on a trip that would ultimately last about 12 hours, having to anchor near a coastline, and then be towed a few hours, finally arriving at night.

We headed out of Long Beach in very light wind, enjoying the conversation and the zen of just being on the water. "What a great feeling to be on my new boat”, I thought to myself.

Then…outside of Palos Verdes, three things happened.

  • The breeze completely died.
  • Matt mentioned that it looked like the boat was blowing a bit of smoke.
  • The engine died.

Now, if we were in a movie that had some sort of computer generated peril, then like a nerd magician, I could certainly save our asses from a movie magic demise.

But, here in the real world…not a damn thing…I was mostly useless.

So, Matt checked all the systems, while I looked on helplessly. I had no knowledge of diesel mechanics at that time… I felt useless.

The good that came from this event is that it made me realize that I would never want to feel useless on a boat ever again. This trip would catapult me into learning as much as I can about every system aboard.

Matt went through the systems one by one… He mentioned he thought something might be clogging the exhaust, how he knew this, was black magic of some sort to me at the time.

Coming to realize the engine wasn’t going to start again, we dropped the anchor near Christmas Tree Cove.

Obvious side note, get boat towing 24hrs or more before buying an old boat! It’s cheaper than shelling out for an uncovered tow. You need to have the coverage instated something like 12hrs before needing a first tow, otherwise they stick it to you for being an idiot.

I paid a $900 dollar idiot tax.

Merry ChristmasTree Cove.

SO THERE’S THAT.

Lol, sorry that happened. If it makes you feel better, I had to get towed back the first 2 or 3 times I took my boat out. Although I was thankful there were plenty of peeps around to tow me in at the nominally cost of a case of beer.

I felt like drinking a case of beer after signing the check for that tow

Everybody I know has Boat US towing insurance. I consider it a bargain and have used it twice.

Thanks Christian, I now have Boat US towing I should have gotten it before taking receipt of the (new to me boat). Not sure why I didn't think about it... a stupid oversight really. Lesson learned...
