Oxygen and greasing SS linkages ?

When inspecting the pictures of the steering linkages, the SS cables and fittings and the bronze wheels etc., I was impressed by how good they all looked (despite the exception discussed elsewhere).

One initial thought I had (from my days of messing with British sports cars) was that I really should smear the working cables and pulleys with grease to protect them and make them run and work more smoothly. Given the need for SS to be exposed to oxygen for corrosion protection I wonder if applying grease would be a mistake ?

Probably not a good idea to seal out the oxygen with grease. I think it's one of these catch 22's. If you could perfectly seal it, you'd probably be OK, but....

It might be worth looking at a "dry" lubricant like McLube on your sheaves. Another lubricant I like that might work well on your sheaves is Tri-Flow - originally got turned on to the spray variety of this for bicycle chains, and it's pretty good stuff.

IIRC, when I replaced the cable/chain on the steering gear, Edson recommended light oil for the chain, cable, etc. Oil is probably the best choice for cable or chain that is not exposed to weather/water. The oil will stay in the crevices of the chain and cable lubricating it and protecting from corrosion. The negative may be that it will need to be renewed yearly, at least, but that is pretty much a good idea anyway. RT
