What is it ?

It was almost impossible to get a picture of it and even more difficult to actually see.

Any idea what it is ?

A massive diode or current limiter maybe ?

Thanks,

Can you trace the wires? Where is this located? Under the nav table or nearby?

Looks like there's one hookup with a BNC connector which suggests some type of radio/antenna/ground setup.

And that's just a wild guess.

It is next to the engine compartment. I happened to see it as I removed some doors for better access during the diesel "service" and I was crawling around in unnatural poses being curious.

I think only the gray wires (bundles ?) are attached, the copper pipes go to a sink and the 16 ga. wires go to the fuel gauge and volt meter further up. At least I think so.

I will trace them next time we get down to her.

Could be a high-temp/fuel shutoff switch as suggested. If that's the case, the unit would trigger something to stop fuel flow to the pump. There should also be an audible alarm inline as well.

But I'd better stop guessing because I could be way off base.

The gray wire sheath looks similar to something I found on my E30+. There is some kind of sensor mounted in the front of the stove cabinet just above the cabin sole. On the face of the cabinet there is a small, round fitting with a metal screen in the center. Behind the cabinet, which I can't access to see, there is some kind of fixture that feels like it may be similar to what you have in the picture. The gray wire runs into the engine compartment, but has been disconnected. (Don't really know if the engine compartment is where the wire is supposed to terminate since it has been disconnected.)

I figured it was some kind of sensor for propane gas that would automatically shut off the gas line if there was a leak. Or maybe, as mentioned, it is a heat sensor that would do the same thing in the event of a fire.
