Liquid Spills

This year we had way too many liquid spills on the Galley counter top while underway. I would like to blame this on guests on board but both my wife and I have had this ugly experience as well. Trying to figure out some kind of simple method to hold cans of cheap beer, soda etc while at the galley. Something temporary so when we need to hold beverages we can. Otherwise stowed away.

I have a nice teak 2 beverage holder. No place to mount it without ugly mounting hardware. Thought about attaching some suction cups to the bottom of it. Havn't found suction cups that I can attach. The countertop is the original white laminant.

WM has an array of white plastic bev holders with suction cups. Here is the big question.....

Has anyone had any luck/experience with the suction cup holders?

I have had limited success with suction cup holders on gelcoat unless it is nice and shiney. I doubt they would hold for long on the textured countertops in our boats. My best solution for this to date is a cutting board that fits in the sink with cutous for glasses. See my link below and look under projects from my Pearson.

Keeping liquids in the container where it belongs.

Kim, This is just a stopgap solution but one that works pretty darned well in moderate conditions. It's an old an old sailors trick, nothing that I came up with on my own. Simply wet a folded paper towel and place it under the can, cup or glass, it'll work amazingly well to prevent stuff from sliding across the surface and spilling. It even works on the fold-down tray when flying. Glyn Judson, E31 hull #55, Marina del Rey, CA

Tim and Glynn,

Thanks for the ideas. We do have a square of that rubber webbing non skid stuff that fits on the lid for the stove.

The cutting board idea looks like a good one Tim. I think I will look into something like that.

Have you looked at "little Suckers" they are disk neoprene and you stretch them over the bottom of a bottle can cup or what ever and stick it on a surface. I use on to hold a plastic cup full of plastic knives and forks on the counter behind the sink and it only moves when I move it for cleaning. I have had deck awash on the 29 and it sat in place. It also works on smooth surfaces; you can stick a bear can on a bulkhead if it is smooth.

Randy,

Where did you get the 'little suckers"? I did a google search and came up empty.
Gotta keep the drinks safe in a brisk gale!

I made some similar to these out of OLD wet suit material, the kind with no cloth. about a 5" disk with a 1.5" hole in the middle - works great for bottles, cans, fairly straight sided glasses - if on a smooth surface

The local West Marine here in Vancouver carries the "little suckers". I don't know if they call them that as they are covered with WM logos and such. They are inexpensive and are frequently used as give aways and promotional items at shows and events.
