Does anyone know of a charitable organization on the Chesapeake or there abouts that would accept a donated sailboat to use? Lots of organizations will take them for resale, but that eliminates most of the tax advantage.
The boat is a Pearson 26 with a 9.9 hp ob.

Thanx Ted. I passed it along to my son who owns the boat (and another). He will contact them

They sail mostly Freedom 20's which were designed for handicap access, but also have a couple of other boats they sail.

You could contact the Sea Scouts (http://www.seascout.org/) to see if they have a branch (or troop?) located in the area...

Tom, Long ago I did a stint w/ the Red Cross as a sailing instructor and they were always on the lookout for boats. Although mostly Sunfish types we did have an Oday 20 here on Lake Mendota for "large" boat experience. ;)
Worth a call or two to your local chapter.

Might also see of the St. Mary's College sailing program is interested. Lots of boats get donated to them- mostly race boats, but they might still be interested.

I've sailed in military MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) boats that had been donated. However, regulations prohibit MWR from soliciting donations. This means that it may be a painful process to figure out how to give your boat to a military marina. But, if the boat is close to a military facility, you could give their MWR marina a call and ask...
