Sailing music

After reading Greg's thread on speakers, I started thinking of good music for the collection on the boat. I know a purist would say there is nothing better than the wind and waves, and there is some truth in that, but there is a time and place for everything.

These are some of my favourites:

For the start of a race:
Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries (a very Viking piece)
Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture
The Police - Synchonicity 2
Ultravox - Reap the Wild Wind

For sunset:
Handel - Watermusic
Mozart - Requiem
The Morriston Orpheus Choir - Myfanwy
Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellites
Chumbawamba - One by One

For sunrise:
Grieg - Morning
The Stranglers - Always the Sun
The Waterboys - The Return of Pan

For reaching the mouth of the bay:
Enya - Orinoco Flow, or Storms in Africa

For when the weather turns sour:
Eurythmics - Here Comes the Rain Again
Supertramp - It's Raining Again
The Alarm - Rain in the Summertime
Or the weather turns really sour:
ACDC - Hell's Bells

For a summerday beer sail: Chumbawamba - The Good Ship Lifestyle
Madness - Night Boat to Cairo

For taking out landlubber guests:
Gordon Lightfoot - Edmund Fitzgerald

I will stop there, but if you have any particular pieces or songs that stand out as favourites, I like to hear of them to add to my collection.

A couple of others to add to your list (which could be quite endless...):

Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, for in the evening as the full moon rises

Beethoven's 6th symphony "Pastorale", 2nd movement, for when the storms are anticipated

Great selections Gareth.

Great selections Gareth. Glad to see there's another Stranglers fan on the water. I also like a little AC/DC when things start getting rough, Thunderstruck is my pick.

I just installed a 200 watt power amp over the weekend. Shakes the hull now.

I made a sailing play list of my own, just for cruising:

Wooden Ships - CSN

I'm your Captain - Grand Funk

Longer Boats - Cat Stevens

Lost Sailor - Grateful Dead

Son of a Sailor - Jimmy Buffet

Sail On Sailor - Beach Boys

Sloop John B. - Beach Boys

Shipping up to Boston - Dropkick Murphys

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Theme

Jaws - Theme

Pirates - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Madman across the Water - Elton John

Wipe Out - The Surfaries

Yellow Submarine - The Beatles

Octopus's Garden - The Beatles

Southern Cross - CSN

I am Sailing - Rod Stewart

Running against the Wind - Bob Seger

SAILING SONGS I HOPE I NEVER HEAR AGAIN:

Come Sail Away - Styx

Sailing takes me Away - Christopher Cross

Music can really enhance the sailing experience. When the wind picks up and we are sailing to weather there is nothing better than "Riders On The Storm" by the Doors.

200W? Wow. You could invite MTV to a party on your boat with that.

I will go online to try all the recommendations given, thankyou to all. There are some sailing songs, such as Styx, and Rod Stewart, that you hear far too often, hence trying to find suitable music somewhat off the beaten track, which I think most of my suggestions are, even if the sailing connection is tenous. I know Tchaikovsky was writing about Frenchmen and Russians on the steppes, but I tend to associate it with the thunder of broadsides off North America going on at the same time.

Incidentally, the Stranglers were meant to be playing 20 miles from where I am now next weekend, but the festival got cancelled due to flooding (there is a storm going on now, with the wind howling off the Irish Sea around my stone cottage; thankfully I am well above sea level). I could have added 'Golden Brown' for sunset, and 'North Winds Blowing' for bad weather; and 'Sometimes' for the landlubber crew.

Any other suggestions are welcome - the list is potentially endless, but any music that is somebody's special favourite is something probably worth discovering.

I wish the Stranglers would come back to the States. I am a huge fan and have see them here three times. I have see them with Hugh once and Paul twice. Not sure who the new singer is. I forgot to add the Stranglers, "Longships" from the Raven album to my sailing play list. Heck that's about the Vikings. All good Ericson owner's are Vikings at heart right.

Actually when I am single handing I don't listen to anything but the wind and waves and occasionally the VHF. I enjoy listening to all the stupid power boaters distress calls. Most of the time they have no power and are drifting for the rocks. The first thing the Coast Guard or Vessel Assist asks is if they have an anchor. Why they don't have it set before they call for help always mystifies me. Never the less, very entertaining.

Stay Dry Gareth!

When I depart from the dock, especially with guests on board, I like to play the overture from Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. The music is very nautical, and makes one feel like "an admiral in the Queen's Navy", and the rolling tympany at the start usually gets everyone's attention.

Tom Lewis - Poles Apart

Craig likes to play the Poles Apart album which includes the following songs:

  1. Northwest Passage
  2. Saltpetre Shanty
  3. Rio Grande
  4. Randy Dandy O!
  5. Round The Corner, Sally
  6. "The Transports" Shanty
  7. Heave Away, M'Johnnies
  8. Liverpool Judies
  9. Stormy/Walk Him Along, John
  10. Roll the Woodpile Down
  11. The Wreck of the Nancy Lee
  12. Bear Away, Yankee
  13. Marchin' Inland
  14. Get Up Jack, John, Sit Down
  15. One More Day
  16. Leave Her Johnny
We originally heard them playing at the Wooden Boat Festival in Seattle a few years back and Craig bought one of their albums. It comes with us on most of our sailing trips, as do almost all of Jimmy Buffet's albums.

Gareth,

You might enjoy Stan Rogers, especially his songs about Newfoundland and the rest of Altantic Canada.

Zamfir...

So there I was, not really thinking of sailing, per se, but rather more of the haunting theme from "Kill Bill 1".
And, yesterday I d/l & bought "The Lonely Shepherd" from a 'net source. Now I'm starting to look more into this artist's work...

This will be a great addition to a sailing mix cd.

Any other Zamfir songs I ought to listen to?

Oddly enough, thru an inadvertent quirk of temporary reorienting of my play list on itunes, this was followed by "Suzanne" by Judy Collins. Nice!
And then... "Simple Man" by Skynyard!
:)

Barnacle Bill the Sailor (The clean version, do your own search for the dirty ones :egrin:)

(Tap-tap-tap)"Who's that knocking at my door?" (3x)
Cried the fair young maiden.

"It's only me from over the sea", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"I'm all lit up like a Christmas tree", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"I'll sail the sea until I croak, I fight 'n swear 'n drink 'n smoke,
But I can't swim a bloody stroke", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.

"Are you young and handsome, sir?" (3x)
Cried the fair young maiden.

"I'm old 'n rough 'n dirty 'n tough", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"I drink my gin 'n dip my snuff", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"I drink my whiskey when I can, whiskey from an old tin can,
Fer whiskey is the life of Man", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.

"I'll come down and let you in!" (3x)
Cried the fair young maiden.

"Well hurry before I break the door", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"I'll puff 'n fuss 'n rant 'n roar", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"I'll spin you yarns 'n tell you lies, I'll drink yer wine 'n eat yer pies,
I'll kiss yer cheek 'n black yer eyes", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.

"Sing me a love song low and sweet!" (3x)
Cried the fair young maiden.

"Sixteen men on a dead man's chest", sang Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"Yo-heave-ho and a bottle of rum", sang Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"Oh, a high-rig-a-jig and a jauntin' car, a-hee a-ho are you 'most done,
Belay my boys and the Bull-jine run", sang Barnacle Bill the Sailor.

"Tell me that we soon shall wed!" (3x)
Cried the fair young maiden.

"I've got me a wife in every port", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"And handsome gals is what I court", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"With my false heart 'n flatterin' tongue, I courts 'em all both old 'n
young,
I courts 'em all but marries none", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.

"When shall I see you again?" (3x)
Cried the fair young maiden.

"Never again, I'll come no more", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"Tonight I'm sailin' from the shore", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"If you wait fer me to come, sittin' and waitin' 'n suckin' yer thumb,
You'll wait until the day of yer doom!", says Barnacle Bill the Sailor.

note: Well, it's clean, anyhow.

The City of Prague Philharmonic playing Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy.

Kind of a greatest hits of the first three movies.

Great for leaving the harbor and setting sail, kids love it, gets me moving when I'm feeling down.

The two albums on the water I listen to the most is Santana's Caravanserai and Yes Close to the edge!

It really enhances the experience!
