Sailing music

After reading Greg's thread on speakers, I started thinking of good music for the collection on the boat. I know a purist would say there is nothing better than the wind and waves, and there is some truth in that, but there is a time and place for everything.

These are some of my favourites:

For the start of a race:

I just installed a 200 watt power amp over the weekend. Shakes the hull now.

Music can really enhance the sailing experience. When the wind picks up and we are sailing to weather there is nothing better than "Riders On The Storm" by the Doors.

200W? Wow. You could invite MTV to a party on your boat with that.

I will go online to try all the recommendations given, thankyou to all. There are some sailing songs, such as Styx, and Rod Stewart, that you hear far too often, hence trying to find suitable music somewhat off the beaten track, which I think most of my suggestions are, even if the sailing connection is tenous. I know Tchaikovsky was writing about Frenchmen and Russians on the steppes, but I tend to associate it with the thunder of broadsides off North America going on at the same time.

Incidentally, the Stranglers were meant to be playing 20 miles from where I am now next weekend, but the festival got cancelled due to flooding (there is a storm going on now, with the wind howling off the Irish Sea around my stone cottage; thankfully I am well above sea level). I could have added 'Golden Brown' for sunset, and 'North Winds Blowing' for bad weather; and 'Sometimes' for the landlubber crew.

Any other suggestions are welcome - the list is potentially endless, but any music that is somebody's special favourite is something probably worth discovering.

I wish the Stranglers would come back to the States. I am a huge fan and have see them here three times. I have see them with Hugh once and Paul twice. Not sure who the new singer is. I forgot to add the Stranglers, "Longships" from the Raven album to my sailing play list. Heck that's about the Vikings. All good Ericson owner's are Vikings at heart right.

Actually when I am single handing I don't listen to anything but the wind and waves and occasionally the VHF. I enjoy listening to all the stupid power boaters distress calls. Most of the time they have no power and are drifting for the rocks. The first thing the Coast Guard or Vessel Assist asks is if they have an anchor. Why they don't have it set before they call for help always mystifies me. Never the less, very entertaining.

When I depart from the dock, especially with guests on board, I like to play the overture from Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. The music is very nautical, and makes one feel like "an admiral in the Queen's Navy", and the rolling tympany at the start usually gets everyone's attention.

So there I was, not really thinking of sailing, per se, but rather more of the haunting theme from "Kill Bill 1".
And, yesterday I d/l & bought "The Lonely Shepherd" from a 'net source. Now I'm starting to look more into this artist's work...

This will be a great addition to a sailing mix cd.

Any other Zamfir songs I ought to listen to?

Oddly enough, thru an inadvertent quirk of temporary reorienting of my play list on itunes, this was followed by "Suzanne" by Judy Collins. Nice!

Kind of a greatest hits of the first three movies.

Great for leaving the harbor and setting sail, kids love it, gets me moving when I'm feeling down.
