View Full Version : 2007 Chesapeake Bay Ericson Rendezvous
John Butler

How about a Chesapeake Bay Ericson Rendezvous on June 30th at Shaw Bay on the Wye River? Some of us will be having an informal race to get there (see: http://www.ericsonyachts.org/infoexchange/showthread.php?t=3737&page=3). Maybe you'll want to join in on the race. All are welcome to join us at the anchorage.

Sounds like fun. I hear they are going to dredge the Narrows this spring, so I might even be able to get there without going around Kent Island.

Hi,
this is great to see happening. As you may recall, some of us have been working on other CEOA events. See my posting here for a refresher of recent status:
http://www.ericsonyachts.org/infoexchange/showthread.php?t=4337
I am currently in the loop with Spinsheet to provide them with club activities for publication. Submission deadlines are usually around the 10th of the prior month. We should get this event nailed down so we can submit it for publication!

We'll just be coming back to Annapolis from a two week cruise to the lower Bay. We may be able to make it.

Sounds great! Can an E-27 raft up with you big guys?
John, We'd love to meet everyone in Shaw Bay on June 30th. I'm sure we'll be at our E32 on Back Creek that weekend. We won't be "racing" to get over there but we may have the wine and beer chilling for those who show up. :D
Keep me in the loop and let me know about when you all might show up at Shaw Bay.

Bob, we'll take you up on that offer of a cold one!
I dunno, Mark... . It might tarnish our reputation as snobs...
Of course!, I think adding this to the calendar for everyone is a super idea!

OK,
We've gotten coordinated, and this event will be listed in Spinsheet. :egrin:
Ted is working on putting together a game plan for the race side, and when he has posted the details on that, I will contact Spinsheet and have it listed under club activities.
This looks like a really fun time that Ted and Chris just came up with on their own. It's great to see Ericson owners in the region collaborating events independently. I look forward to seeing what else people come up with to enjoy our fine boats together.

It's nice just being able to write about rendezvous on the Bay again. Seems like this cold weather is hanging on forever and I hate cold weather.:baby:
We'll put Shaw Bay on the calendar.

Its starting to look like quite a nice gang getting involved here! I just wish it would warm up enough for me to finish my varnish work. We launched the boat nearly 3 weeks ago and havent been out since... More to come on the race side of this event. I am pretty certain I will have a friend in a power boat to do the start and take pictures. Maybe some other Ericson classes want to get their own start? I am reasoanbly sure we can make that happen too based on interest.

We'll probably be there. Not sure if we'll sail over with the crowd or meet.

Hi Ted,
looking forward to it. Should be a fun event. I'll see about getting it listed in Spinsheet.

Just a reminder that the race/raftup on June 30th is quickly approaching. E-38's are the highlight and will be holding a one design race with other Ericsons welcome to challenge them. Check back here as the date approaches for more information regarding start time etc.
If you haven't picked up June's issue of SpinSheet, check out the Club Section for a note about the event.
Looking forward to seeing many Ericsons on the 30th! :egrin:

Thanks David for the Spinsheet exposure! The plan is to meet in the vacinity of Thomas Point light at noon saturday the 30th and start at 1230. We will monitor channel 65 for communications. My boat does not have the name on it but is called Escape Plan. The course for those who want to race will be from our starting line at Thomas point (Lightouse and Green Can) to the channel marker in the Miles River where you turn left to go into the Wye river. Sorry I need to look at the chart to get the numbers. I will detail it over the radio on race day. Racers will be responsible for recording their finish times. If I get to it I'll try to put together a 1-3 prize but don't count on it. Now if someone else wants to do that...Following the race we will all anchor/raft up in Shaw bay off the Wye for social activities... All Ericsons are welcome and encouraged to attend. I have a friend with an old gaffer who may join us as well. I will be on channel 65 as stated above and can also be reached at 410-919-8539. Hope to see you all soon.

Strider is still planning to join the race. Will be coming down from Rock Hall. Would it be possible to post the course on line a few days prior?
Also, for those of you who are wondering, the Kent Narrows dredging is finished and it is clear sailing all the way through. I came through yesterday on the ebb tide and found 7.5 to 10 feet all the way. See you all in Shaw Bay.

Greetings People-of-the-Bay!
Have a good time at your Rendezvous...we just had ours this past weekend, and it was a hoot!
Please take pictures...your regional page is almost complete...but I need someone over there to write up a short article on sailing in the bay, what's like dodging sandbars, etc...
:egrin:
You can see your regional page on the new site at:
http://www.ericsonyachts.org/people-projects/regional_pages/rp_e-ma-00.php3
We'll be adding either a 'local happens' area off of there, or possibly a CEOA page to revive your old group!
Anyhow - have a good time - and start thinking about who among you writes the best!

I will get the course posted prior to the event. Just need to take a look at the chart and make note of some of the marks. We are looking forward to the weekend. We will likely break off of the raft up later in the evening to spare the gang from our 4 and 2 year old early risers treatment. My son does great on the boat but the 2 year old daughter can be a little demanding:p

We're just the opposite- our crew (us and another couple and their dog) usually burn the midnight oil... as long as we only had a couple of Mexican Cafe Margaritas. If we had 3 you'll see tylenol on the starting line...:egrin:

With you on the Cafe's Margaritas. I live within walking distance of that place for a good reason... I took their recipe home not long ago: equal parts tequilla, triple sec, roses lime. Good stuff.

We already have commitments for that weekend on the bay! We'll be at Dun Cove, north of Knapps Narrows on the east side of the same land mass containing St. Michaels...Dun Cove is more or less along Harris Creek at this point and just about due east of the south tip of Poplar Island (at least as it's represented on the charts).
Hope everyone has a good time...we'll miss you Vikings...we'll be hanging out w/ Pearson owners & the-rag tag group, including us, that comprises the Rhode River Boat Club.

We are getting close and I wanted to share some details. I will post my best attmpt at an NOR and sailing instructions by friday.
As discussed earlier we will gather at Thomas Point at noon and plan to start at 1230. I have power boat lined up to signal the start. We will do a 5 minute sequence for the start. Doubt we will have flags but I will be broadcasting the sequence on vhf 65 for those who care. Official start will be at 1230 so sequence will begin at 1225. A series of horn or whistle blasts at 1224 to signal we are about to start the sequence in one minute. I would like to have all racers check in via channel 65 to confirm their intention to participate in the race so we know how many boats actually race. If you decide to drop out and motor on for what ever reason after the start please hail me on 65 and let me know. I will be on 65 as Escape Plan and will address participants and E-38 Annual Regatta Participants.
My plan is to have us race from Thomas point to the entrance to the Wye river. I will post bouys to be honored in the NOR/Sailing Instructions but the course will follow the channel/deep water to the finish. If there is sufficieint breeze I will consider using R 84 off Poplar Island as the turn mark into Eastern Bay. If it looks light we will simply honor Bloody Point and the green after it to port, the red off Rich Neck to starbord and finish at the turn from Miles River into the Wye, but look to the Sailing Instructions and broadcasts prior to the start for final confirmation. Sorry to get all official sounding but I feel if we are gonna race we may as well all be one the same wavelength.
After entering the Wye River we will intend to raft up in Shaw bay for festivities. I have a lot on my plate but if someone wants to volunteer to secure some awards for say 1st thru 3rd with maybe a best effort award please let me know. I will do my best to get something together but am going to be more or less single handing with my wife and 2 kids...
I am very excited to meet all of you and see your boats and hope this is the beginning of an annual event!

Thanks for getting all this together!
Any chance of having the basics of the 2 course options available for tomorrow? We're getting on the boat on Thurs night and leaving first thing on Fri morning.
Let me know if I can help with anything,

I should be able to get it posted tonight. I thought I had a chartbook at home but was mistaken. I was thinking we would start at TP then honor Bloody point to port, the green lighted bouy G1 (I think) just past Bloody to port, then the red lighted bouy off Rich neck to starboard, then finish at the mark off of the mouth of the Wye. I am not sure what that mark is and don't think we want to sail all the way up into the Wye. I figure if we use gps time to start and ask folks to record their GPS time at the finish we should be good to go. My thoughts on adding R 84 of Poplar Island as the turn mark were if there was decent breeze it would make for a bit longer/better course. If there was a southerly it would be a beat to R 84 then an broad reach/run up eastern bay then a short beat to the finish. Chris if you are sitting in front of a chart and want to post the proper names for the marks I outlined above it would be fine with me. Otherwise I'll grab the chart book off the boat this evening.

Please accept the following as our NOR/Sailing Instructions for saturday's race/cruise I am using an older chart so the bouy numbers may be off my apologies but I think we will figure it out:

Finish: Red Nun "8" southwest of Bennett Point off of the mouth of Wye River entrance on the Miles River.
Course: To be announced by 1215 by SV Escape Plan. It will be one of the following: Long Course: Honor R "84" to port, Bloody Point light to port, G "1" off Bloody Point to port, R "4" off Rich Neck to Starboard, Red Nun "8" to port at the finish. Short course delete R "84" from the long course and honor all other marks as outlined.
Signals: 1224 Series of short horn or whistle blasts to signal approx 1 minute to sequence start.
1225 One Blast 5 minutes to start
1226 One blast 4 Minutes to start
1229 One Blast 1 Minute to start

Race committee will attempt to hail OCS competitors but onus remains with skippers to start fairly.

Awards: To be determined.
Social: Raft up in Shaw bay just inside mouth of Wye River to starboard. All Ericsons and thier friends of any yacht make welcome.
Sunday Race Back: To be determined by yachts present...

We have all the intentions in the world in making the rendezvous but "Vesper" developed a holding tank problem :esad: and I had to order a new one from Ronco in CA. It came in today but now I have to install it. So even though we will probably not be racing we may make it to Shaw Bay. Hope to see you all.

We also enjoyed the first annual Chesapeake Bay Ericson Race and Rendezvous. Thank you Ted for setting it up and congratulations on winning the race! Thank you Chris for providing the awards to make the race event complete. It was great to meet fellow Ericson owners. That was really something to have 5 Ericson 38's rafted up with a 6th anchored nearby (not to mention the other Ericson 3x anchored nearby). What great sailing weather we had, too! It would be great to have more Ericson owners in the area join us next year.

After a near collision with the red and green can, we got off to a late start, but had fun hopelessly trying to close the gap. Our elapsed time of 5hr13min is our standard for improvement when we meet again.
Thanks Ted for arranging this and allowing us to finally connect names with faces. Our only regret is not having enough time to spend with the rest of the group.

Hello all! The "event" last Saturday looked like a big sucess to us.:egrin: I never saw so many Ericsons in one place on the bay at one time. Seeing five 38s rafted together was quite a site too. Since we didn't race our 32 but motored around you instead at the beginning of the race, we got some nice shots of all the "racing boats" together. I'll post a few here but put all of them on my photo studio (at full size) server so they can be downloaded by anyone. I'll post a link to them tomorrow on this site.
Hoping for more Ericsons next time so we can set up a second raft of boats. Maybe we'll be racing next time too. Hope to see most of you again at the boat show and, of course, on the bay.

Great day for Ericsons for sure. My friend Mike even managed to get some flags for our start which was good. We had about 5kts of breeze at the start and about 2kts of current which made things interesting for all. I sailed with my wife and 2 kids who had a blast and were happy to meet all the other Ericson folks. I think Max is now our local Ericson Goodwill Ambassador! The race was a lot of fun. We had a spinnaker reach to Bloody point in about 5kts of breeze but then it filled in to a good 12-15 which gave us a handful getting that kite down with kids and a beer flying to leeward! We got the kite down and a reef in to have Red Rover pass us to windward just before the turn upwind. I managed to get the boat back on her feet and pinched it up in time to get inside at the mark. We continued upwind up Eastern bay and I did my best to sail the boat like a dinghy tacking on shifts when possible and keeping my 2 year old entertained. Max my 4 year old kept reminding me, "Daddy you may have passed the red boat but you still shrimped the kite", all the way up eastern bay. As we got near Rich neck the breeze let up enough to roll out the rest of the 150 and then shake the reef. We finished in about the same 3-5kts we started in with Sequoia not far behind. The raft up was great and I have a ton of photos to get up. My friend Mike got a ton of shots of us racing that I will get out as well. Results are below. One thing is for sure Vince Benn with Wild Blue wins the Best in Show award for his 1997 E-38 Wild Blue. I left the raft up with serious boat envy! What a gorgeous boat. Vince has the boat in absolutely show room condition for sure. We had one of the best sails this year on Sunday with a Northerly at 12-18. I took it easy with only a little bit of jib out so the kids and wife could nap on way to Bloody pt. Then we rolle dout the rest if the jib and sailed with the full 150 and no main. I had never done that before and found the boat very well balanced and was able to sail at 30* apparent and make 7-7.3 upwind. We tacked up to Annapolis then reached up the severn to the academy, reached back out, watched some j-22 racing and then had a nice run home to the south river. All in all an awesome time. It was really nice to meet everyone and thanks for putting up with my inquisitive kids. I cant wait to do it again and hope we get more Ericsons of all sizes.
Results:
1. Escape Plan - Ted Reshetiloff (Max and Anya Reshetiloff on Tactics)
2. Sequoia- Chris Miller and Crew
3. Red Rover - John Butler Fiance Diane and Crew
4. Strider - David Henry and Crew
5. Wild Blue - Vince Benn and Crew
Sorry for spacing on the rest of the names.
As promised here is a link to my business site that has some shots that my wife and I took during the race and later at anchor. You are welcome to download any "full size" image from the selection. I'll have these posted for about 30 days.
