Any Heavy Metal Sailors out there?

Blue Oyster Cult will be rocking the Avalon Ballroom at the Casino at Avalon on August 21st. I know, these guys are now considered a dinosaur band and some members are in their 60's now, but believe me they play better than ever. I for one will be banging my balding head at the Ballroom:headb: . Hey, it's as good as any other excuse to sail to Avalon.:

Hey Jeff:

I love BOC wish I could be there.

On another note I need your help. I noticed in your picture that you had a radar mount that is about 8 ft high. I need to get one of those, can you direct me and give me a price.

Thanks so much.

Radar on my E-27,

Radar on my E-27,

I installed the Fruno 1622 now no longer available, $950. on sale during the no tax weekend. I believe the new model is the 1623. I mounted the display with a swing arm from WM, $59.00. For the radar mast I purchased the Edson kit, I believe it was about $450.00. You can buy all of the Edson components separately. I think a SS mast is available but I went with the cheaper aluminium mast. After about two months of watching the radar mast bounce around slightly, I decided to have my rigger make stays. See the pics. I installed a pad eye on the top of the transom and one on the port gunwale near the front stanchion on the stern pulpit.

So for under $1500. I got my eyes for the fog and night. I felt it was important since I sail out of the busiest Port on the west coast. The system works flawlessly. Saved my butt a few weeks ago when I had to get back for work and had to head into fog with only 50 yards visibility.

Oh, yeah, it's a 10' Mast!

Hope this helps.

Jeff

I bought the JRC radar paid 450 from a rich boater in Santa Barbara that wanted a $5000 new radar. Mint condition.. So I needed a mount and I found one from Edson(navtec) 8 foot mast that mounts simliar to Loren's. This cost more than the radar. hahaha.

I will shoot some pics for you when I get it mounted. The biggest obstacle for me is where to mount in the cabin. Your set up won't work for me. I use that quarter berth all the time. Need full access. I am really going to have to look at this really close. Wish I had a full nav station. Although your set-up is not completely out just need more pics.

Thanks again Jeff.

What's in a name?

Ahoy Rob,

To answer your first question: What is Cucamonga? Cucamonga is best known here in Southern California as the name of the City, Rancho Cucamonga. The name of my boat is the 'Pride of Cucamonga" after a obscure Grateful Dead song I heard way back in 1973. I was 17 years old then and I said when I get my own sailboat I will christen her with that name. It's kind of a country style song with lots of steel pedal guitar about a drifter trying to get down to Mexico from the Northern California Boarder. I was land locked at the time I decided on that name, living in Walla Walla, Washington. I had no idea at the time that I wouldn't acquire my first boat until I was 44 and living in So. Cal. It turned out to be a very appropriate old California Indian name.

Here's more on the name:

"Cucamonga" comes from a Tongva place name (most likely spelled Cucamog-na [Coo-cah-mõg-nah]) that probably means "sandy place".
"Cucamonga" has always been recognized as a funny-sounding place name, among such exotic places as Timbuktu and Bora Bora. One of the catch-phrases of the radio show "The Jack Benny Program" involved a train announcer (Mel Blanc) who said over the loudspeaker, "Train now leaving on track five for Anaheim, Azusa, and Cuc... amonga," taking progressively longer pauses between "Cuc" and "amonga." Part of the joke, for the Los Angeles audience, was that no such train route existed. As a tribute to this 'publicity', the city of Rancho Cucamonga built its minor-league baseball stadium on Jack Benny Way, and erected a bronze statue of the TV host outside of the building's entrance (Coincidentally, Jack Benny Way intersects with Rochester Avenue, which is not named for the character portrayed by Eddie Anderson on the Jack Benny Program, but rather was named in 1889 after the hometown of three investors, all brothers, Rochester, New York ). In one of his many popular media crossovers, Blanc used that same catch phrase in Daffy Duck's voice in the 1948 Merrie Melodies cartoon "Daffy Duck Slept Here" and later in Bugs Bunny's voice in a 1960s Looney Tunes cartoon. In an episode of The Simpsons, Krusty the Clown mentioned Rancho Cucamonga, along with Walla Walla, Keokuk, and Seattle, as funny place names.Rancho Cucamonga is a city located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 127,743. But a July 1, 2002 Census estimate put the fast-growing city's population at 143,711.

Bet your sorry you asked now. LOL:devil:

To answer your second question:

The burgee flying under the Jolly Roger is the flag of my Marina, Cabrillo Marina, part of the Calif. Yacht Marina Chain.

Those looking for a radar mount might consider looking at the Garhauer site... they have a beautiful setup, very well made, in stainless steel. They also have a dinghy/motor davit that can be combined with the radar mount, so you can get two applications with one mount - and it's pretty slick. You can even tilt the radar dome to match your angle of heel, so that the dome remains level if you aren't...

Here is the link for the radar towers:

And all the goodies you can attach to them:

I saw the whole lineup at Strictly Sail, Oakland, this year, and was very impressed.

Good luck!

I like a lot of the old stuff. I'm more into like Led Zepplin than like BOC. But I do have a "More Cowbell" T-shirt. :egrin: "Ramble On" is probably my favorite rock song from that era. I almost named my boat "Ramble On" but I saw a painting called "The Shores of Valinor" depicting the elves and the hobbits arriving there after the end of the Lord of the Rings, and it looked just like Catalina's west end! (here's a link, see for yourself). So Valinor it was to be. "Ramble On" is from Led Zepplin's "Middle Earth" period anyway.

'Twas the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, the evil one
Crept up and slipped away with her.
Her, her....yea.
Aint nothing I can do, but...

Ramble on,
And nows the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
I'm goin round the world,
I got to find my girl.
On my way,
I've been this way ten years to the day.
Ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

There's a really kickass band from the UK that is reviving the arena rock style, like Kiss and Queen. They're called The Darkness, and the lead singer sounds like Freddy Mercury reincarnated. The music is nothing but catchy guitar riffs and sing-along choruses. If you liked that kind of thing, you'll like The Darkness.

Hi Jeff:

Got that pic of radar today. Killer sailing in Channel Islands today. Blowing 18k and whistling at 7 knots.

Looks Great Don

Looks Great Don,

Your going to love that Radar. Especially in your area. When I had my old boat up at Channel Islands harbor I got caught in the thick fog you get up there a couple times. Once coming back from Santa Cruz and what was worse, my GPS was in the shop. I had to use dead reckoning and didn't see any thing until I got about a 100 yards from the breakwall. I could hear the big ships passing close as I crossed the channel. It was pretty scary. I did keep radio contact with Vessel Assist. They were a great help and at least some one knew I was out there.

I had a great sail myself on Saturday. No wind until about 2:30 pm, so I motored up past Pt. Verde near Redondo Beach and sailed wing & wing all the way back to Pedro. The wind built to 17 knots and I hit my record speed on the GPS, 8.2 Knots! I had pretty good sized following seas and was surfing off and on. What a blast. Three and a half hours to motor up and two and a half hours to sail back!

Wish I could join you for you Sea of Cortez trip. Just can't get the time off.

Oh yeah, Nice back stay adjuster!

Beam Winds!

Hey Jeff thanks for encouragement. We are going to have to go sailing together before my sailing trip. I will see what my next weekend I can get down with my wife. A reason to get down to LA.

Your boat looks good, I was checking out your pics from July 4 and the radar mount.

See ya

Jeff, I saw a boat suspiciously similar to yours, radar tower and all, heading for Two Harbors on Saturday about noon. But I couldn't make out the name on the transom. Was that you? I was coming back from Avalon, entering the harbor at that time.

Hey Mike

Hey Mike,

Yeah, I was out Saturday but I was headed up to Redondo, not the Island. No wind until 2:30 so I just motored up the peninsula past Pt. Verde. Then I got 16 & 17 knots. Sailed back to Pedro and hit my record speed on the GPS. 8.2 knots! Wing & wing all the way back with no whisker pole. It was a great surf ride!

Here's a map of Cabrillo. I marked where I think we both are at. Keep in touch, we will find each other eventually.

Bimini?

Hey Don,

When do you think you will be down here in the LA area. I would love to have you come out for a sail on the Cucamonga. It would be great to compare notes.

I am not quite ready to spring for a dodger yet, but got my hands on the hardware for a bimini frame that looks like it will fit my boat. I checked out your bimini photos on your web site and it looks like this frame will mount exactly like yours. The only thing is that the forward frame on the one that I have is shorter. In other words, it hinges about two feet higher on the back frame than yours does.

Not sure if I will go through with it yet, but it might be nice. I got a rough estimate for just the canvas that was about as much as you paid for the whole thing.

Questions::confused:

Can you sail with it down?

Do you have to move the topping lift?

Does it rest against the aft stays when not in use?

Could you post a pic of it set up?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Jeff

Yep, that's exactly where my slip is, B46 in Berth 31. I'm moving Valinor there Saturday. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the Cuc!

When I had it installed I did not want it to be up while I was sailing just at anchor. So I had the company set it up that way. If I had to do it again I would have it so I can sail with it open.

It is mounted in between the stays and the canvas is cut between it. GREAT way they designed it. The topping lift is fine does not get in the way.

I will pop some pics this weekend.

FYI-If you sail with it, since our mainsails dont sit very high off of the deck the bimini will be kind of low. Only issue, not a big one.

Where are you coming from? What harbor?

Hey Mike,

Where are you coming from? What harbor? What time do you think you will be in your new slip at Cabrillo? I used to be on "B" dock for four years. I have some good friends on that dock. Especially Don & Mila Anderson who have a beautifully restored 1973 Islander 36 right at the bottom of the gang way. I am sure you will meet them. Everyone knows them. They are live a boards and are very helpful to everyone they meet.

I will be putting around in my dink looking for you.:egrin:

The pics will be very helpful.

Thanks Don,

The pics will be very helpful. I already showed your other pics to my canvas guy and he said it would help to see ones with the bimini open. Thanks in advance!
