Puget Sound Scenery

Here are a couple shots of the Redondo Beach area of Puget Sound. Redondo is now in the city of Des Moines, Washington. In the background of the first shot is Maury Island. A block or so to the north along the beach is Salty's Restaurant. (Bring your parent's credit card.) Note the large beach at low tide in the second shot, courtesy of our 15-foot tidal range. The condos have a great view of the "boat ramp follies" that are guaranteed to entertain the whole family. Ships arriving and departing the Port of Tacoma add to the tranquillity and restful ambiance of Redondo Beach.

That's pretty remarkable. I'm suprised the keel hasn't slipped out. :eek:

So Craig, did it manage to float back off that precarious perch at the next flood, or did it tumble at some point?

There are people that do this sort of thing on purpose for maintenance on the cheap or in remote locations, but I'm not sure that's exactly how drying-out is typically executed. ;)

My wife took those pictures in 2003. We walk the 1/2 mile boardwalk all the time - it starts right in front of the condos. The owner and the police were there. She came back to watch them handle the rising water. It re-floated ok.

I ran across those last night in our photo archive. Seemed like a good subject for the Raftup.

Repose is the real name of the boat. And that's probably the strangest part of the whole situation.

How'd she get that second picture? Is that an aerial picture from a news agency or something? Seems to be taken from high off the water?

She was on the Redondo fishing pier which was about 2 stories above the spot where the keel is sitting. This was a pretty extreme low tide. The boat ramp isn't really fully visible, but it's maybe 200 feet from the end of that float to the street end. The beach also gives a clue to how far out the tide was that day.

The skipper tied the boat about as far out as he could. According to Ellen he tied it up at high tide the evening before, thinking the end of the pier would be safe (no depth sounder!?). He spent the night with friends who live on the beach road, and came out in the morning to find that the police closed the ramp, since they didn't trust the boat not to fall over. Ramp use cost $5.00 and parking was free at that time, and many fisherman launched there. Until the tide came in - maybe 8-10 hours after he grounded - no one could use the ramp. (#%*!#@)

The nearest alternate launching point is the Des Moines Marina boat lift. About a half hour north. Free parking there, but the lift costs $20 minimum these days.
