Although the specs say the 1981 ericson 38 displacement is 14,900 does anyone now what they actually weigh. I need to hire a crane and need the correct tonnage.

Weight and displacement are identical. Same thing.

e38,
When we pulled my boat in Feb. for a purchase survey she tipped the scale at 21,000 lbs (crane scales are typicaly +/- 1 to 2 k). Magic, now Allegria, is equiped for long range cruising. She has over 400' of chain 3 anchors, extra tanks, water maker, radar, wind vane, solar panels, wind generator, a whole bunch of extra parts, etc. etc.
As you can see the weigth adds up quickly.
IIRC from our splash tests at the factory, they came in between 15,000 and 16,200, with most closer to 16-ish. Typically production boats end up 5-10 percent heavier than the design spec. BUT, this was COMPLETELY empty-no water, fuel, gear, interior cushions, etc. I think the rig was in the boat when did this, but I can't recall to say with conviction.
I would tell your lift operator to plan on at least 18K if the boat is typically equipped.
Good luck!
