Did y'all see this in the LA Times today? Should be online for free for a few days more. Unfortunately the online article does not have the photo that was published in the Calfornia section of today's print edition.

The 90-foot sailing vessel hits a sandbar in heavy surf while approaching a harbor in Oxnard (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/ventura/la-me-tallship22mar22,1,3384048.story?coll=la-editions-ventura&ctrack=1&cset=true)

Officials said the Irving Johnson, a 90-foot vessel operated by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute in San Pedro, was approaching the entrance to Channel Islands Harbor at 3:55 p.m. They said the vessel was using its diesel engine to maneuver when it struck an uncharted sandbar apparently created by heavy seas during the night.

Mike this is my Harbor, quite a situation. The boat is basically on the beach and will be towed by tugboat to Ventura Harbor to be pulled out of water tomorrow. The seas were too rough to do anything today.

The spot where it hit the sandbar is one of the biggest surf spots on the coast. I think there is more to this story then they are saying. Maybe came in too close to breakwater and that is where they hit the sandbar.

The coast guard tried to tow the boat off the sandbar but the rope snapped twice. They gave up!

See ya all

Salvage crews managed to refloat the ship last night with the high tide! Hopefully, damage is not too bad. Reports are that she floats on her lines.

We had a bit of a sail on Easter Sunday. There wasn't much of any wind, so not very memorable. Upon our return to Channel Islands Harbor, we watched the depth meter with more interest than we normally do. What we saw did show that there has been shoaling, apparently the sandbar still exists.

We saw a depth of 3.8 feet below our 6' keel. This was immediately out from the southern most attached jetty, opposite the south end of the detached breakwater.
