Just hauled my "new" 1983 25+ and a hands on inspection confirmed play in the lower rudder shaft bushing. There is a flat ring loose on top of the rudder that appears like it may have been the rim of a plastic/nylon bushing that no longer exists. Can anyone describe and size what this bushing was originally? The steering has been converted to wheel steering so that complicates the removal somewhat. Also is the rudder a foam core or ? The shaft appears to be stainless steel. Love the "new" boat and the OMC saildrive. After some initial motor "sorting out pains" it performs very well. Thanks in advance for any help/info. Frank T
That plastic ring is to keep the top of the rudder blade from binding on the hull. The rudder tries to float up.
I do not know what sort of bushing or bearing material was used inside the top and bottom of the tube, however. Other Ericsons use an SS shaft, so that rings true. There are lots of other owners of similar models lurking here -- more info should be popping up here soon...
Too bad about the wheel conversion in such a small boat, but such is life. Did the tiller come with the boat? Was the rudder shaft left alone, or shortened?
How's the OMC saildrive working? As I dimly remember, those were based on a 15 hp powerhead. (?)
