Fishing while sailing

I started trolling a 6" swimming shad behind the boat while sailing this summer. I had been catching short rockfish this way, but Saturday I finally caught a keeper. I was surprised when I heard the reel start peeling off line, because the boat speed was 6+ knots. I had always read that was too fast for Rock.

Anyway, this guy was 24", perfect for dinner.

Nice work. Before I left the Bay Area in 2015, I trolled for king salmon off my boat, which resulted in several backyard parties. I still had all my fishing gear aboard on my recent trip and so trolled for mahi mahi on a day of light wind, about a week into the return trip.

Mahi

How many did you catch. I will bet that was by far the best dinner you had on the trip? I hope you still had some nice wine or a cold beer to go with it.

Just one. I hooked one earlier in the day, but it snapped my 40lb test line (it was a few years old too). I had to break out some new 60lb and tie it to parachute cord (easier retrieval). Yeah, tasty, but my favorite was still that 35lb king salmon I caught a few years ago. Not too many of those anymore around SF Bay.
