Two Harbors Moorings Discounted for Winter

"Weekly winter mooring fees range from $52 for the string line." Makes me wish I had a 25' with a swing keel. :egrin:

We spent last week out there; $70 for our favorite bug-hooping mooring. There were only two or three other boats all week, and the Saturday rush brought about 8. It was nice.

Too bad the bar doesn't have winter rates: Pay for two nights of drinking and the rest of the week is free!

Sven, they did increase the rates January 1. Also, several good fishing areas are now off limits.

Did you catch anything ?

-Sven

Yeah, it was a good trip.

We left San Pedro with rancid mackerel for bait (Ports of Call had nothing good), so we caught nothing the first night. But the next morning, schools of mackerel flanked the boat and we caught lots of fresh bait. That night we caught four large bugs before bedtime. The mackerel returned the next day, and we caught bugs or crab every night thereafter.

We also saw more wildlife than usual. Four whales on the trip across, large pods of dolphin rushing in and out of Isthmus Cove every day, literally flanking the boat, and herds of sea lions jumped around us every day. At one point, the sky grew black with birds as they descended on the cove and seemingly covered every inch of water; after feeding for 15 minutes, they all vanished. We saw four bison grazing near Cat Harbor. On the trip home, there were hundreds of dolphin near the boat, and some of them were doing somersaults in the air. The critters were far more evident than during most of our stays in the cove.

Edit: On the down side, the kelp flies were pretty bad for a couple days. What can we do to keep them away?
