23-1 vs 23-2 ... differences ?

What are the differences between the 23-1 and the 23-2 ? Are they successive models or fixed vs. centerboard designations ?

Thanks,

Hi Sven,
The Mk1's mast is farther forward and not as tall (be careful ordering sails). Different cabin/deck shape. The rudder goes through the cockpit floor/hull on the Mk1 and hangs off of the transom on the Mk2. I'd like to know if there are differences in the hull shape and if the keel weights are the same.

Hi Mark,

Since the rudder hangs off the transom I guess we now know we have a mk-2 :)

Thanks for the explanation. How did you know the answer ? In all the Ericson-23 web pages and literature I've downloaded I haven't found any that showed a rudder positioned forward.

Maybe there's a big info cache that I haven't come across yet !

Thanks again,

E23 stuff

Mark 1 boats were built from '68 to '70, and were just called the Ericson 23. 165 were built. Mark 2 boats were built from '74 (I think) to '78 and 270 were built. Mk 1 boats came only in fixed keel configuration, but the Mk 2s had centerboard (drew about 5' when down) or fixed keel (drew 3'8") options. Mark 2 boats are rated faster, probably mostly because they have a taller rig, but the early boats were good sailers too and a number of them are in regular use today. The fixed keel is rated just a hair faster than the c'board, but there isn't much difference. Email me for info on the E23 Owners Association and I'll send you a copy of "23 Tell-Tales", our newsletter, and more info about the boat.

Sven / Bob,
Im new to this forum and have just read your December posting.
I have a 1968 E23. I would be interested in receiving your newletter as well.
Thanks!

Hope that is correct. Welcome to the 23 group. You will enjoy "tell-tales" it has been an excellent resource for me. We have a '77 23 Mk2 and live here in South Mississippi. And of course with the warm weather in the South have been able to sail throughout the Winter. In fact we had a great sail the day before last. 10-15 knots warm low 70's and a beautiful sunset. Our boat "Olas Bailarina" is a fixed keel model and sails like a dream. Just exactly as others in the 23 group have told me to expect. Sven can attest to that as well as Bob and others. Enough for now. Fair Winds and hope our plots cross in the future.

Yes, hull speed in no time and turns on a dime.

Probably the prettiest boat in its size ever designed !

I was just re-reading your sea lion encounter story and was amazed at the speed you have achieved. We have cracked the 5 knot barrier and looking for more.

I was just talking to my father about that earlier tonight. Theoretically, our hull speed ought to be 5.7 kts with a typical 1.3*(sqrt of DWL in feet).

If I hadn't been measuring with a GPS on multipe occasions I wouldn't believe it either. Of course, when you are next to a 27 foot boat or something larger you still end up falling behind, but she sails beautifully even with our ugly sails.

Just read about a sea lion (in Alaska ?) that jumped up and grabbed a fisherman, pulled him under water for a bit. Also saw one jump up and grab another sea lion by the tail to pull him/her off a large mooring ball down in King Harbor on Saturday. We'll give them room from now on, rather than just thinking they are cute :)

Over the last month of sailing I've tuned up my E23 mk1 to reach 5.9 knots on a good blow. I'm usually running in the 5.2-5.5 range. I'm looking to crack that 6 knot barrier!

I had my E23 Mk1 out on Saturday. The wind looked fairly light as we drove by the beach so I hanked the 150 on. The wind built soon after we got out of the harbor (Santa Cruz CA) and we were briefly seeing 6.8 knots on the GPS, close hauled! We were way over powered so we tucked in behind the Wharf to take advantage of the wind shadow and change the headsail to a 120. After heading back out we were still hitting 6 + knots on a broad reach. I really need to settle on a reefing system and get it installed!
