I'd like to see a picture of that as well.

My 30+ has the nav station on the starboard side with the front edge of the table aft; the front part of the quarter berth cushion functions as the seat. (When you sit at the nav station you are facing forward.) No backrest.

Hi Mark,

The nav station on our 1984 E30+ is also just as you described. I know the quarterberth was intended to be the seat for the nav station, but I have never used it as such--it just seems awkward. I now have my tool box in the section underneath the nav station and we toss our shoes in there as well. If I want to do planning, I move my charts to the salon table where I can spread out more, and the seating is more comfortable. So my question, do you (or does anyone) actually use the nav station in the way that it was designed?

Mine is the same.
If you look at both sides of the 1/4 berth (on the engine cover for example) there are 2 wooden tracks. These tracks are for a "backrest" in order to make this a true seat.

I have not seen a picture in any of the brochures or my owners manual.....

Since I have not done any long distance cruising in this boat I haven't really used the nav station much for its intended purpose. I usually use it when working on electrical wiring projects. I have used it a couple of times with a local chart book, which fit OK on the surface; I could see how a larger single sheet chart might be challenging. Once I slide into the seating area it doesn't seem to be too uncomfortable.

The only "tracks" I recall on the engine cover look more like "fiddles" to keep anything placed on top of the cover from sliding off. I'll have to take a closer look this weekend.

Pics of my Nav Station

Here are three pics of my nav station. The only things resembling "tracks" are the raised "fiddles" on the edges of the engine cover and quarter berth, which I think are only to keep the quarter berth cushions from moving out of place and keeping anything on top of the engine cover from sliding off.

Pictures from my 1984 30+

Here are the pictures from my 1984 30+.
These rails are there to hold the Nav Station Backrest in place.

I have not been able to find a picture of the backrest in any listing, or any of the Ericson literature.

Ack so...very eeenteresting...

I wonder if those might have been an addition by a previous owner; wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. Based on the layout and compactness of the nav station/quarter berth area a "designed-in" backrest doesn't seem logical, but I guess that is not out of the realm of possibility either. Maybe some kind of custom option requested by the original owner?

Original Equipment

The original paperwork in the boat, from the dealer has this item as "included" (what I will call the "window sticker" for the boat).
And it is listed as the Nav Station Backrest........
