Considering Selling

Hi Guys,

For a bunch of reasons, I'm considering selling our 1977 E-32. Any thoughts on the best way to advertise and sell (eg. Ebay, newspaper, broker, etc) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

After 3 years of on the market my uncle finally sold his 1981 Islander 36. He tried a broker for over a year and in that time there was may 5 showings if that much? So what we did after trial and error. We created a pp presentation and saved it as a PDF. This had pictures and a description of the boat and equipment, hours on engine etc,as well as sail diagram from Sailboat data.com. Basically what you are doing is marketing the boat yourself. In the PDF tell the prospective buyer what makes an Ericson 32 better than a Catalina or Hunter. My uncle was asking 38k for his boat and it was in immaculate condition. I don’t know what he got, but I know he had a lot more inquiries when we took the asking price off. You will find there are a lot of tire kickers out there, and you need to weed them out. They will ask; what is the lowest you will go? Don’t waste your time with these people, they want something for nothing!

We posted his boat on Sailboat listings. Com and craigslist and reissued it once a month. We put a few pictures on both as a teaser then sent the PDF when someone seemed interested. Again, no price was listed but my uncle would send the PDF with what his asking price was in an email. If anyone asks you for more pictures, once again tire kickers tell them to come see the boat. Other than that they are wasting your time. One other note, I sold my Morgan 27 in Jan. When I sold it I priced to sell. This way you are not dinking back and forth for a few pennies more.

Hope this helps!

I Screwed Up !

I was supposed to have met with a broker this past Sunday, but when I took my wife and 7 yr. old daughter out for what was to have been a last sail on Saturday, the weather was so great and the boat performed so well that we decided that it would be worth the struggle to hold on to it.

I called the broker Saturday evening and cancelled the meeting.

Thanks for the advice on selling. Perhaps I may have to use it in the future, but not quite yet.

Its funny how that works! I always think well I could be putting more into my 401k etc. Like everytime I go out sailing its justification to hang on.
