What to do with 297' of never used 3/8" BBB chain ?

We bought the chain for the manual windlass but have been convinced that a manual windlass is not practical on a cruising boat, especially when the windlass is single speed with a 6" lift per stroke :0

So we got an electric windlass sized for a slight smaller (5/16") but HT chain.

So now we have 297' of chain and don't know what to do with it. Minnies would probably just give us pennies (almost literally) and it isn't worth hauling it all the way there for that.

Ideas ?

How much will you give me to take it off your hands? Really I could use it and if it is reasonably priced ( Pennies is probably too reasonable!:newwink:)I would pick it up next time I am in southern Cal. Or you could sell it to someone with:wife::wife: but no chains! Edd

297" of 3/8" chain

Sven,

297' of 3/8" chain! "That must be a MANLY anchor ya have" If my math is correct (always questionable) that is 1.7lb/ft x 297' ....................Just over 500lbs of chain. Surely I have something wrong here? I am about to replace my rode and would be interested if you would be willing to sell part or perhaps I could split up with others on this site. Let me know if that is an option.

I am considering having the mast painted and remember what a wonderful job you had done on Senta II. I do not remember where and who did it for you. Was it in San Diego?

Thanks for keeping us up on your modifications on Senta II is prep for the adventure.

I think we paid just over $3/foot ? If 0.75 /foot sounds ok it is certainly yours, but how will you get it home ? It won't fit as carry-on :0305_bigg

You probably do, but it is not the weight of the chain !

That's the right amount and tensile strength for cruising all over. If someone wants to split it 50-50 with you that would work too, or whatever. Just have to time any handover for high tide as hauling it up the gangway would be fun !!

It was Captain Glass who did it. I would not recommend the rigger but the glass-work and the mast painting Captain Glass did for us was outstanding.

Two ideas come to mind. First, most windlass have options for different chain gypsies, I assume that you have looked into this already? Easy to swap a gypsy and just use the existing chain. Second, if the chain is new and unsed I would think a chain retailer may be interested in taking it in trade if you are buying new 5/16" chain from them. Almost 300ft is most certainly resellable, or pieced out.

We intentionally chose the 5/16" HT size because of the weight and volume. The 3/8" is too close a fit in the chain locker (just under 1' freefall) and the weight ... well it is heavy. The HT chain safe working load is up where it should be too.

That is a thought, or he might have commercial customers who would be interested.

Thanks.
