There's just nothing like hours with an experienced broker, marine surveyor and engine mechanic in which you get to ask any question you like.
A written survey is mostly boilerplate. A good surveyor gives the insurance company as little excuse as possible to jerk you around.
What you get is an experienced eye on what you will be looking at for years to come.
