Totally perplexing wind instrument problem

Thanks, Bob! The voltage in this system is quite low, about 8 volts, but the wires are small 22 AWG. None of the wiring is enclosed, so it should allow any heat to dissipate.
If heating is contributing to this intermittent dysfunction, do you have any suggestions or advice to remedy this?
