hello everybody.. on my ericson 32 the upper part of the rudder has a lot of play and is making knocking noises when boat is moving at anchor. Is it possible to put some stuffing box rope in there to stop it while boat is in the water?

Check the screws that hold the post fitting to the emergency tiller access plate in the cockpit. That's a common problem and first thing to check off the list. You may have to go below as there are nuts that will have to be tightened from below. If you unscrew the tiller access plate you should be able to tell if that fitting is flopping around underneath by moving the wheel back and forth.

Tiller boat ? You have to look at the underside and see that the rudder post fitting is secure as most likely nuts holding it on. The screw's are probably bedded and will appear tight from the top.
