Odysseus on a Toy Boat, Remastered

Every sailing boat should have aboard a copy of The Odyssey, for nights in the rain when the trickster hero sailing home carries us with him. The recent translation by Robert Fagles suits me, concise, easy, full of story.

But the real hero of this exceptional video is my pool boat, made with a chainsaw from a fence post, with a sail of 4 mil plastic drop cloth. No rudder. It runs on a 30-foot line of monofilament attached to a heavy sinker tossed in mid pool. I can watch it for hours, as I know Odysseus himself surely would have as he wept on the shore of Calypso's isle, imprisoned by her song and wiles.

Yes, he made mistakes. To that bag of all the winds he really ought to have paid more attention.
