It might be just us but every time we shopped for a next boat we looked at the engine area and bilge. As you might guess we did some horrifying sights!
Sidebar- last year an old friend sold his Cascade 36; he and his wife had owned it for for well over 20 years, and even did a repower many years ago. It had no fancy gear or electronics, but every part looked clean and functioned. These boats show up on the market regularly but like many boats from the 60's a lot of them are unattractive and dirty. He sold it quickly for a decent price. The new owners were looking for one and really liked the back story (owner aging out of active boating but with a fully maintained boat). They subsequently joined our YC and still seem very happy with their 'plastic classic'.
No great epiphany here, except that very few boats for sale are shiny clean and really "turn key." Buyers of "used" boats are buying a boat that is, to them, a "new" boat. Some do want a fixer-upper, but most would like their sailing vessel relationship to commence at day one.... ! On a positive note.
