e35 or e34

Just raced my 1987 E34 in 15-30 knots. I furled a 140 to around 125 or less and put a flattening reef in the main. Did quite well. Afterwards a gentleman, who had owned a 87 E35 said I would have been much better off going with the 140 and a reefed main. Any thoughts relative to this boat...
